Using 07 and up cams in 04 touring?
« on: September 05, 2011, 07:52:55 PM »

Just got off the phone with a buddy who had intended to go gear drive in his 04.  Runout won't let it happen though.  He's now asking about the newer tensioner setup.  He's aware of the Harley kits (25284-08 and 25284-11) that upgrade the cam chest using new chains and tensioners but the old cams.

The kicker here is, from another project, he's got a set of 2007 and newer cams he could use.  So he's trying to save a buck.  Have never made this swap myself so never did the homework.  But thought I remembered someone somewhere having or making a kit early on that used the newer cams in the 06 and prior touring engines.  If someone knows of such a kit or parts combination let me know please.  I'll pass it along.

If he wanted to use those cams he could but it would cost him nearly the same as buying the right conversion cam from the beginning or an early chain drive cam and use the HD hybrid kit.
The 07 cams would need the rear bearing journal precision ground and a race pressed on then you would use all of the OEM 07up big twin cam plate hardware.

That's all I needed.  Thanks guys.

Wasn't wanting to put a ton of leg work in to someone else's problem.  So the simple answer works very well.
