Anyone been out in the rain yet?
« on: September 06, 2011, 11:47:49 PM »

Great to see the pictures coming on line from the guys getting delivery of their new rides. You lucky guys.
But it is not always sunshine and low humidity, hence the following four questions I ask.
So who has had their new 2012 CVO out in the rain yet?
Did the rear speakers fill up with water?
Did the water blast out in a pulsing spray from the speakers when you cranked up the volume?
Did the pannier bags remain dry inside?
I ask as there has been some concern expressed in the forums about the water tightness of these speaker housings. But there has been no definitive proof that they are water tight or that they leak because the sun has been shining everywhere I presume.  :)
England is not so sunshine friendly as Arizona or Florida. In a few months I will be taking delivery of my FLHXSE3 and thus by default will be riding in the English rain.
I wonder if I should be looking into a way to seal the speaker grills to avoid water ingress. What y'all reckon?
Ride safe all.

I think that would be a great idea! I hope someone comes up with a slick way to keep these babies dry... not looking forward to my first "waterlogged speakers"...

I had to ride home in the rain from the Hogs for Dogs party out at the Bunkhouse, ~35 Miles from home.  Didn't have any issues, the stereo kept thumping the water out of the speakers, the saddlebags were dry inside, and the bike handled exceptionally.  Maybe the only complaint I might have is that the windshield does not completely block the rain, my forhead was getting pelted by raindrops; but I am used to riding without a windshield so I am very happy.  :huepfenjump3:

Thanks for the info. My worry has been resolved.
When it rains just turn up the volume. I think a mix of AC-DC should keep the speakers free of water.
In the morning I place the order for a black 2012 CVO SG. Sad to see my 2007 Road King Custom go as a trade in, but unless I won the lottery tonight the King has to go. Had a lump in my throat tonight as I gave the King its last spruce up.
Ride safe

I questioned a salesman about keeping the speakers dry....his response was "there must be some weep hopes in them". I wonder where all the water is going to wind up if there were weep holes??? :'(

May be a set of these Saddlebag Lid Bras - 57805-03A  will allieviate any issues or worries. Think I will order a set.

Would also stop the gal from dragging her boots across the lids when getting on the pillion seat - not that she would do that - but just in case.

But wouldn't that muffle the speakers?

A bit I suppose, but one just turns up the volume.  :bananarock:

I wouldn't advise covering the speakers with the saddlebag bras unless you're going to perforate them.  The lid bras are lined with a soft cotton like material that will also aid in suppressing the sound.  You might as well disconnect the speakers if you're going to totally cover them.  I'd look more into have a custom set of grills made out of gortex or something like that before I'd totally cover them.  Something that will let the sound pass relatively unabated.  JMO

I'm thinking the speakers are waterproof, they would have to be!? ???  ???  I have washed mine twice, and rode in the rain, and you just open the lids to the saddlebags and let them drain.  What good are they if you cant get them wet?  :confused5:

Thats cool. That's the feedback I was looking for, from you lammgrel, and from DESERTBEAR54. That you have both had the sounds wet reassures me that I will not need to do anything. Harley have obviously thought it through.
Thanks for that feedback.

One thing I like about the rain is that you can only get so wet and then shut up and ride on. The TP, bags, and Bushtec do their job well.  Doc

Oh yeh  :). I had my tongue in my cheek when I wrote my conclusion about Harley having obviously thought it through.
