After Garden of the Gods we headed west on Hwy 24. We planned on riding to the top of Pike's Peak but bad weather suggested otherwise. So we continued on to Cripple Creek where the rain and 40 degree temps made for a real fun time. We ended up talking with one of Victor's (just down the road from Cripple Creek) finest about which road to take to the Royal Gorge. We had three choices, two of which we loose gravel roads, and the other had a road washout. So we decided to head back out of the mountains, not before stopping to warm up with a hot cup of Starbucks.

For those of you who have never been to Cripple Creek/Victor, well it's basically a casino and old mining town. I think every store must be a casino. Kinda pulls the fun out of seeing an old mining town.

NORAD. What can you say? When it said "The Use of Deadly Force is Authorized" we decided that there must be some extra security. So we pushed on until another sign said basically stop, turn around and go home. Funny though when we stopped at that second unassuming sign a military security truck passed us by and waved.

The day got better as we headed south to the Royal Gorge.

My wife is horrified of heights so getting her this close was amazing.

That evening the weather turned to crap and with snow above 8000 feet and rain below we decided to cut our run from Colorado Springs to Vail to Denver short and just to a quick run north to Denver up Hwy 83. Good things because run was cold, cloudy and damp.

We did manage a stop at the Air Force Academy. The chaple interior is pretty awesome.

Hope your engine noise turns out to be minor. Re: 91 octane. I forget how the physics works, but at altitude, anything over 91 is wasted. Hence 91 up here and 93 in the flatlands. You could run avgas and with stock compression, it wouldn't make a difference.

After spending a couple nights in Denver for the interview and to have dinner with family we headed to the Peak to Peak Highway on Friday 9/16 which runs from Hwy 70 to Estes Park. Great Road! I highly recommend it.

You can tell the weather cleared up but the temps dropped. This was our first sight of snow so far.

14 years ago we spent our honeymoon hiking Rocky Mountain National Park. While we were there we came across an incredible Italian rest owned by this gentleman from Mexico. For the past 14 years we've bragged about his marinara sauce to everyone we could. It is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!! You could put this stuff on dirty and you'd think it's the best dish ever.

Once we got to Estes Park we could not find it. It used to be called Sweet Basil but after being sued by another Sweet Basil restaurant he changed the name to Sweet Basillico.

I'm telling you hear and now they have the best marinara sauce in the world! That's a big claim since I've been to Italy before.

Sweet Basilico in Estes Park, CO. Remember the name and place!

There's not much to see between Cheyenne and Casper, WY. Wide open country, buttes and a highway that runs through it. After a long day from Denver to Casper we were ready for to get of the machine. Again my friends mantra kept crossing my mind "you've got to pay the piper"

After leaving Casper on our way to Jackson, WY we decided to stop in Dubois, WY for a break. 4 hours of gusty cold winds deserved a shot at Whiskey Creek Saloon.

After running through 20 miles of road construction with wet gravel we finally got our first glimse of the Grand Tetons. Or as the Frenchman who first saw them called them "Les Tres Tetons" (The Three Beasts)

With only one full day to see Grand Teton NP we tried to see everything we could. The next few posts are of this day.

Pictures do not do justice. This park is stunning.

This is Jenny Lake about 9:00 AM.

Grand Teton black bear on Signal Moutain about 100 yards away. He kept looking at all the people on the hill and grazing on these little red berries.
