How deep of water have you ridden through?

This subject has come due to the many rains we have had lately with flooded out roads.

I assume none of of us enjoy traversing creeks with our bikes, but sometimes Chit happens.

I led a group last weekend locally and came across a "Ford".  It appeared to vary in depth from 4 inches to about 8- 10 inches.

It is very hard to determine depth without some measuring device.

I turned the bike loose (first one across) and plowed water with the oil cooler with steam coming off everywhere.

2 followed shortly and the rest just turned around and chickened out.

The water was moving rather quickly, but having never done this before I had nothing to gauge it with.

If you need to proceed..... how deep will you go and when will you turn around.

There have been a few deaths of people driving their cars through water, so I am sensitive to some of the dangers.

My actual greatest fear was dumping the bike over in the water and not being able to get it back up.

There was green algae all over the road and very slick.

Glad you and the others that crossed are alright, but that was not a good idea on several levels.  You admit to not knowing how deep the water was, the water was moving quickly, and that the road was slick with algae. Those that turned around "chickened out?"  I think not.

In my experience the shallow ones will get you because of the moss that builds up quickly.  Doc

Got to agree with Brian here Jeff.  With all you knew and all you didn't it sounds like you had a bad case of landing fixation or keep-going-itis.  I've been in water I shouldn't when I had absolutely no choice.  When there is a choice, however, heed the words of Monty Python, "Run Away."

Here in Arizona we call them "Washes" and the State of Arizona will issue a Citation if anyone tries to cross one and gets stuck or asks for help. Its called the Stupid Motorist Law!! My take on it is stay out of running water if you can't determine how deep it is. Better Safe than Sorry!!

After experiencing hydroplaning on a recent trip, there is no way I will ever go through any water, especially running water! :2vrolijk_21:

At a bare minimum would have shed the shoes and bared the brawny white legs and walked it first.  But I'd have said "screw it, McDonalds is over 'there'" and headed that way.  Basically, on a bike, if you have to think twice about doing something you should already know it's probably not the best course of action.

Everyone and everything is safe though.  So now it's all just Monday-morning-quarterbacking.  Jeff saw what he needed to and got through safe.  Just hope he doesn't do it again.

Frequently run into stream crossings in the Texas Hill Country. Key to staying dry is feet up on pegs. and DON'T go down the center, it will be coated with moss. The cages tire tracks are the best spot to ride as they keep the moss worn off. Still hate them.

Although not a good idea at all, I am glad everyone made it safely.  I had some hydroplanning while on the return trip from the Masters in 2009.  The harrowing experience left me with this thought.  Never, never ride through any water.  A simple method of determining stream velocity is:

Velocity = The distance in meters it takes an object to float / The time (in seconds) it takes the object to float the distance.

Not any water on the bike yet...but I did drown one of the City's Sonoma's in about 4 feet of water.  Funny, it never quite ran right after that.

Well.  I would admit it was not my brightest moment, but all turned out OK

My wife and the other wives did get off before we rode through it.

We were not going to take them down with us.

They took off their shoes and rolled up their pants and walked through it after we rode.


I do now have the rep for being either the craziest or stupidest amongst our group.


Darwin has not not claimed me yet, but it was sure funny until a Range Rover hit it at 20 MPH and set a wake 8 feet high.....bastard....
 

even if I had gone down the bike would have been the only casualty besides pride.

I do not think I could come up with a possibility of bodily injury.
