When you asked 'how deep can you go' i immediately started thinking about my good old days i had with my Jeep with a high snorkel on the intake and my big arse tires and having that thing deep enough to have water flowing over the hood and jeep trying its hardest not to drift along with the flow of water. Back then it was a question, where can we find the deepest creek and lets turn around and do it again :P Then i snapped out of my day dream thinking, trying anything  merely close to this on motorcycle is crazy. I would have been right with your friends turning around and retreating at the slightest flow of water i have no way of knowing how deep.. I say you are lucky, and thank god you made it across. Had you dropped it, i think you, or at least your bike, would have been toast, being that your friends did the retreat...   ;)  - fun interesting question though, getting stuck in that situation would be pretty hard to deal with once you passed that commitment zone as you did..

don't ever do that again if there is any alternative  ::)

If there really is none first walk out your way before you try driving through, only that will tell you if there are slippery or deep spots in there and you will get a feeling for the drag - but don't take off your boots doing so, you never know what may be in the water. If possible have two people walking both sides of your bike when crossing to assist if neccessary.

Unfortunately we had a lot of floodings in the last couple of years in our area and sometimes just no alternative but to cross. But even with a 4-wheeler it's safe policy to check out any water thoroughly before trying to cross.

Before I would even think about passing through 8 inch of water with a Harley I would prefer camping  ;)

As soon as the water might reach the frame of the bike it's no longer a calculated risk.

Around here they clean, with pressure washers, the boat ramps to get rid of the algae buildup. It doesn't take long for it to come back and make the ramps slicker than eel chit. Busted my ass a few times hooking up the boat. Could not even imagine trying to ride  a bike on it :nervous:

Up here the problem is pot holes. The water may not look deep but the VW bug you can't see because it got lost in the pothole under the water may be a problem when you try to drive over it. If I got into that situation, I would agree with some of the others. Get off, walk the route to ensure relative safety and then proceed with extreme caution if there were NO other decent options.

You were fortunate. Glad it turned out OK.

Yes, but the "Slick Willie" comparator is known by all to not exist naturally but to instead by a synthetic.  This is all about dino slimy.  No synthetics here.

I once ran into, and through, water that came up nearly to the top of the cases on a Softail with my wife on the back. It was raining so hard I simply couldn't see the water until I hit it. Almost drowned the engine out, but it sputtered for awhile and then started running OK again.  I wasn't going very fast, either - but the road dipped down and there it was. Should have been going probably 10 MPH in that rain... or just stopped altogether. But the rain came up very suddenly and I rode right into it.

Lesson learned... Don't ride faster than you can see to stop safely in poor visibility!
