HID headlamp install
« on: June 12, 2006, 10:06:19 AM »

Can I ask any of you guys who have installed the HID headlamp yourselves (i.e. not by the dealer) to confirm that you definitely DO have a red & black wire at pin 6 of the Deutsch connector from the right hand control switches?  Instructions say there is one, manual says there is one, but could I find it?  no siree!  :-[

Finally got this done, and it works fine, BUT - the chrome headlamp trim ring is now a TERRIBLY poor fit!  In order to get it on at all, I had to move the wire retaining clips for the rubber seal up to near the top on both sides, due to them interfering with the mounting ring/bracket that comes with the HID headlamp.  Even now, there's a big gap where the rubber is held back by a boss on the new mounting ring/bracket. And it lets water in...  :(  Steamed up headlamp....

Could SKS with a parts manual for the CUSE just check for me that the chrome headlamp trim ring on the domestic models is the same one as on the HDI models? I cannot believe it should fit this badly....  >:(

Jim,
Sorry you are having the trouble. The gasket thing is an issue. I actually had mine to tear a bit, but was able to get the fit where it should be. For sure, did not have the water issue at all. Sounds as thought something is not right. I even switched my trim rings to the visor type. Did not have a problem with it.

For what it is worth, the local shop that did my install with the HID lamp, almost gave it up. They had to get outside help to finish it. The wiring was differrent than stated on the install data.

My install was done at H-D dealership and I have no issues with fit of trim ring
Have about 6,000 miles and 9 months of time with the HID
I like it but it took some time to get use to what it's posed to do (the light beam)
But I Like It

The wiring is complex, Ken, and the instructions poor, but that isn't the real problem - this fit is just not good.  :(

As with jeffj, mine was also done at a dealer and I also have not had a problem with the chrome trim ring.  Even had it off awhile back to adjust the aim and had no issues getting it back on without a gap.  BTW, now that I got some more vertical adjustment out of it, I take back anything bad I ever said about the HID -- I love it!

Anyway, I don't think your problem has anything to do with the HID mounting differently.  I think your problem may be that the retainer that holds the rubber ring in has to slip into a notch on the top of the headlamp retaining ring (not the outer bezel, the retaining ring that fastens the headlamp to the outer fairing).  If you don't have that bezel in there properly, and it can be a SOB sometimes to finesse it in there, then the trim ring will not position itself correctly when you install it, and you can end up with a gap.  This happened to me when I installed the chrome headlamp trim on another bike.

No, that's definitely not the problem - if anything, that bit goes in easier than the stadanrd ring!

HD one Iain - which is the same, really - just HD re-branded.

Not sure that's the ideal fix either though. I think some Dremel work is called for!  ;D
