BRAKE LIGHT PROBLEM. 09 FLTRSE3
« on: September 12, 2011, 08:20:22 AM »

Anyone know if there is an adjustment for the sensitivity to have the brake lite come on easier (and thereby disengaging the cruise control) when applying the rear brake? I have to slam the rear brake down hard for the brake lite to come on or disengage the cruise. Yet I just have to squeeze the front brake lightly to have it light up/disengage. A real pain in the butt because normally I would just tap the rear brake to disengage the cruise control. I now have to squeeze the front lever to disengage which is more of a PITA.

I am sitting on an airplane so I think I will have a better answer later.  There is a brake light switch on the right side of the bike attached to the bottum of the frame below the passenger foot peg.  You can check to see if it is adjustable.  You may also be able to cancel your cruise control by rolling the throttle forward.  Hope this helps for now.

Thanks. Might  jack it up to have a look see. I have the extended warranty but still hate taking it to a dealer for anything but major chit. Only started doing it last night. Too tired to look at it last night.

No adjustability in the brake light switch (front or rear).  Rear is just a simple pressure switch that screws in to the brake line.  If taking too much pressure to activate it should be replaced as that means light to moderate brake pressure (like when holding still in traffic) isn't turning the brake light for others to see you either.

Sounds like the switch needs to be replaced.

That said it is easier to cancel cruise by rolling the throttle forward unless you also needing the brakes.

Brake Switch installed is only about $40.00.  Almost rear ended another rider because I tapped the brake to cancel cruise and nothing.  After stopping, we also found that I had no brake lights at all.  By gently using the front break for the rest of the ride I did have brake lights but didn't bother with the cruise anymore that day.

My rear brake light went out this past Sunday.  Front brake the light works fine but the rear brake works fine but no light.  It started by me not been able to set my cruise.  Then a buddy of mine said , it looks like your brake lights are on all the time.  Shut bike off, turn on again an it worked fine , after I set the cruise one time and activated the rear brake , lights stuck on again and no cruise.  I thought it was my wig wag for the brake lights.  but finish the ride now I have no rear brake lights, front works good and cruise works fine.  Hope is the rear switch (anyone knows how to trouble shoot it) multimeter on it and activate look for continuity?

This is what I did to confirm the switch problem. I disconnected the wires on the switch and hooked the wires to a twelve volt tester. Light worked fine. I took it back to the dealer and it was confirmed the switch was faulty. I had them install a new switch because I have  the extended warranty. The brakes will have to be bled and its not quite as easy because of the ABS. Everything is as per normal now that the new switch is installed. Mechanic said the shop has installed a whack of these switches recently.

Not an uncommon problem... I've had two switches replaced on my FLTRSE3 replaced, one on my FLHX and 2 on my FLSTFI, as well as one on Momma's old FXDL...

they must be made in china...

Regarding the brake light switch subject: On my 09SEUC all is fine the front lever, rear pedal activate brake lights and shut off cruise control also pulling in clutch shuts off cruise control. However, the brake light switches they are selling us now are pieces of c##p. I have a 95 Heritage. It takes the same rear brake light switch as my 09( I haven't verified the part numbers, but they look identical). The original rear brake light switch on the 95 was twice the size and lasted until 07. Since then I am on my 4th rear brake light switch. And you have to bleed the brakes each time. (HD actually reimbused me for 3 of them). Just my 2 cents and 3 beers. CAHDBIKER

From Dennis Kirk here is a link to the aftermarket version of the switch from Accel.  I've used this switch for years and it's been as reliable as the old Harley switch.  Hopefully it's not been dumbed down like the new Harley switch.  The picture, however, looks like the old switch.

Not sure if this is will help or not, but read on the CNN website that HD is recalling 9-12 touring bikes due to brake light switch issues....I have not received a mail notification yet from HD like I have for the other recalls but it may help if some are still having issues.
