Front brake clunk
« on: September 12, 2011, 09:29:05 PM »

Get a clunk from the front when I hit the brake. Sounds like the caliper. Any ideas?

Could be your brake pads shifting.

When I back down my driveway (using the front brake) and then take off, I her a clunk when I hit my front brake at the corner.  Just the first time, after that I don't hear it anymore until I back down the driveway again.  I assume, like the car, it's just the brake pads adjusting.

It is probably the floating rotor shifting from foreward to aft, should only happen once during the ride unless you back up and apply the brake

Plenty of other folks have posted on that same issue over the past few years.  After you check the caliper mounting bolts and the pad pins for proper torque just to be safe, I'd suggest your clunk is likely either the pads shifting as JCZ mentioned, or the floating rotors shifting on the bushings.  Tends to usually be a first application thing with cold brakes, especially if the first application is backing up out of the garage.

wreckman, if it's a deep sounding clunk/snap it could be your head bearing nut is loose.    axil

Perfect description of the clunk I have on the 09 FLHRC. I feel better now but after 40K and never any issues other than the noise I figured it was not a significant problem.

I seem to have this problem but on the rear.  Today was about the 4th time I've had when applying both front and back brakes very hard at the same time.  I am 100% positive the clunk is from the rear.

I've never been impressed with the Harley brakes but now they have me nervous!
