Front Tires splitting
« on: September 14, 2011, 03:57:02 PM »

I've got less than 7k on my CVO Glide and I'm getting my second front tire from HD due to splitting down the seam on my front only.  Anyone else with the issure?
My last one was almost like I rode straight down a razor blade and it went around the entire tire.... wish I would've gotten some pics.  this tire is looking like it's going to start throwing chunks out of the center of it.

Just letting you know... do an inspection!

Wow!  Good eye, Keith.  Must have been a bad batch.  No wonder HD seems to be moving over to Michelin...

I came across this topic on another forum and checked mine to find a small crack.  Dealer (thank goodness) was exercised about it and replaced under warranty - no questions, no problems.  Is this problem only on the Dunlop D408 tires that come on the front of the RUSE?  Not heard of others but there may be problems there also.

While dropping mine off at the dealer, another dude pulled up on bike just like mine... 11 FLTRUSE.  Introduced myself and asked if he has noticed anything on his front tire, "nope, the bike is new".  Showed him what mine was doing, and sure enough, it's happening to his too.  We looked at several bikes at the dealership, notta except for our two.

I just found a very noticeable split across my front tire . I found it after giving the bike a clean.
I have 7500Km on it now and it still rides fantastic.
It almost looks like a join or something because it is quite straight.

Interesting I have the 09 RG with 9,800 miles. Somewhere back I (approx 7500 miles) had all the fluids changed and the dealer had a recall on the front tire. Dunlop D407 to D408 I think. Anyway on return from Sturgis was washing the bike and I have noticed that the sidewall is shredding and has cuts in it? Will have it replaced this week. Wouldn't say splitting but shredding will small splits??

The H-D Dunlops are the most worthless junk tires I've ever ever experienced. The factory front Dunlop on my '08 was totally unsafe garbage by 3,000 miles.  First time in my life I haven't gotten two rear tires out of a front one, the rear was junk too, went with new set of Avons .  The factory (H-D) should be ashamed to turn out bikes with such crappy rubber , but considering some the defective unsafe junk that rubber is going on nowadays.............

don't confuse the D407F recall ("cupping"on 09 tyres D407F) with the new D408F problem ("splitting"/"cracks" on 10 up tyres D408F) reported elsewhere already since March 2011.

Those "cracks" are much more disturbing, a real danger while the "cupping" was more of an inconvenience.

They are for sure.  My front tire was nothing like the one shown in your link but my dealer replaced it right away.  And now my rear tire has been replaced due to severe cupping.  So bad that I thought I had a warpped rotor as I used the rear brake during the last few feet of a stop.  And I had a whine so loud I thought I had a bad bearing.  All due to the cupped rear tire.

Now I wonder why the replacement tires will be any better than the originals.   :nixweiss:

Is this just on the Road Glides...or is it on other models as well?

If you guys that are having this problem would take and post pics it would help others to know what they're looking for. :2vrolijk_21:

highly unlikely - why should a tyre split on a Road Glide only?

But it's amazing that the Road Glides since last year seem to show such phenomenons as "slow speed wobble" and "split tyres" fairly exclusively  :nixweiss:

That's what I was thinking......if it's predomently Road Glides that do the watusi shuffle, why not Road Glides with the tire splitting issue. :nixweiss:   Haven't heard of it on any other model.

A few years ago, had anybody told me that these kind of issues were paticular to one model of bike I'd have thought "he doesn't know motorcycles".  But lately, it seems like we have to throw out all the old thinking and consider any possability if it's coming out of the MoCo :nixweiss:

When they used to say their "Glide" it was safe to assume it was a Road Glide.  But now days it could just as easily be a Street Glide.......they sure sell more Street Glides. :nixweiss:

Mine had cupping in the front and no tread left in the center on the rear after 5k.  Ditched them both and have got 10k out out of Dunlop Elite3 with no problems.  Best tire I have ever had for wet corners here in Washington State.  Rear 240 is about ready to change out.
