Does your Ultra leave you "Stinky" and/or "Smelly"
« on: September 14, 2011, 06:00:53 PM »

 :confused5:
I've owned a Wide Glide and two Road Kings prior to my '09 Ultra, and they did (not) seem to me to smell up my clothes after just a brief ride like my Ultra seems to do.

Clearly,  while in stand-still light to light traffic during Myrtle Beach Bike Week and/or Daytona Bike Week,  with dozens of idling Harleys all around you,  you're gonna end up stinky from exhaust fumes from rich running Harleys all around you.   Same deal if you get caught down wind at some bar where a burnout pit is getting used...........All of that is part of the "drill" and has to be expected.

However,  It seems to me that I can take a shower and put on clean jeans, T shirt, etc. and take a brief ride on my Ultra (with no excessive traffic around me) and come back home smelling like I had been in "wall to wall" bike traffic in North Myrtle Beach during the peak of the Rallys a few yrs ago.

I do (not) believe I have any exhaust leaks on the bike,  but this is my first Ultra with the full fairing and lowers and I'm kinda suspecious that there may be some kind of "vacuum" created behind the fairing that keeps the exhaust fumes riding along with you instead of free-flowing out behind the bike. :nixweiss:  It's aggrevating to me and not something I noted with my prior rides...........

Anybody relate to that or I'm just the guy with the smelly SE Ultra :drink:

I think you hit the nail on the head. The exhaust from a Wide Glide will always be behind you but there are "eddies" created by the lowers, windshield, and fairing that can actually bring air forward. I was bringing by brother on the back of my bike from dropping his car off for warranty service on an expressway doing 60 when I turned around and asked if he farted. He just giggled and acted all surprised that I could smell it. Think of it as one more sense to use when enjoying your ultra.

moscotter, after this thread don't be surprised if you see Harley Deodorant on the shelves at the HD dealer. Naturally their will be three kinds one for men in a black can(it will cost more) and one for women in a pink can, and one for your bike. Of course if own a S.E. Bike it will cost more. Thanks a lot. I thought I was crazy and losing memory. Glad you posted this question. Neither my Ninja nor NightRod would deposit that onto clothes. If I'm goin short distance, when I'm back, I'll actually leave the clothes separate from my others to wear again provided they're not funked up from me. Waste to wash clean clothes to go for another quick ride and have em smell like I've got my exhaust pipe backfed into my drier duct.

So install the Yuill Brothers, Elite D exhaust system, the tip turn the exhaust out 15 degrees & you won't have to use the fuel additive......  Go ahead ask me how I know they work

You are not alone, my 08 SE3 does the same thing, I smell like exhaust and oil on even short trips.  This doesn't happen on my Goldwing.
