I have a Black Diamond on order arriving the first week of November.  It's my first CVO and I found out recently that the engine case is that grey color instead of black.  I find it hard to believe that the grey engine case is more attractive on that bike then the black engine case would be, but I have not seen one in person.  I had some hopes to black out the engine & the bike in the future, but I think the engine case color might be a deal breaker on that.

I cannot understand why Harley would do that...

I would usually prefer black, but I love my '10 Spiced Rum...

I personaly like the black engine with Chrome covers.
Gunmetal Grey on CVO engines suits the Chrome covers, blends in better and brightens the engine area up nicely.

2011 SG in Ktypto has a blacked out engine and on looking at the engine is was a blast, looked great only I think the Blacked out covers would look better closer to the engine color and not gloss. JMO

For some time the Grey was the only color for the CVO's.  I like it with any color tins.  The black doesn't do anything for me.

Wasn't my preference either.  But it's been on the CVOs for years.  And it is a "cleaner" look.  It grows on you, that's for sure.

I think it was the 2010.5 blacked out model that had the black motor......nice.

The MoCo actually calls it "granite". It's a textured paint with a pebbly look and feel. I like it a lot. I have a '95 Evo FLHTP with a black engine with chrome rocker covers, chrome cam chest cover, etc. The black engine looks great on that bike because the paint is Vivid Black. But on the CVO SG with the Hot Citrus paint, the granite engine makes it look more modern and creates a better overall look than if the engine were black. I think that the granite color showcases the big 110" engine more than black would.

Agree on non-black bikes it looks fine, but on a black bike the grey seems out of place.  Just my opinon.

The granite grey on CVO's is nice. My last softail was black and the engine cases were grey, it bugged me for years!

PITA to keep clean as well  >:(

I like the grey engine on the twilight-blue stardust-silver 09 FLHTCUSE4 because it fits nicely with the silver paint.

I would not like it on a black bike however.

I think the grey makes the paint pop a bit more.

I like the gray (aka granite) - sets the CVOs apart from the regular HD lineup.  Also, I think the granite is easier to keep looking good. The black starts to look dull as the bike ages.  Have not seen this with the gray.

I'm not sure how/why the MoCo decides what color engine goes on what bike, but sometimes it doesn't make sense.  I would think that on a black bike, you'd want to put a black engine on it, but they don't seem to think that.  Maybe for this year, all the black 110s are put together with the black primary, valve covers, etc, for the SERGC, and didn't put any together with the chrome pieces for the other lines.  On the the CVO's I have, the granite looks great, especially on the 11 Gray/Black SERGU, it's a natural color fit for that one.  It really looks good on my Hot Citrus SESG too.  But, I'm not too sure I'd want the granite on a primarily black bike.  The MoCo did it right for the 2010.5 SEUC, but missed the boat on the 2011 SESGs, by not putting it on the Black one.  Same again this year with the black SESG.  JMO.
