Gaining Space between Rider and Passenger Floorboards
« on: September 15, 2011, 01:34:03 PM »

I have the 2011 RGSEU...love the bike. Only problem was when I pulled out of the dealer shop with my wife on the bike and the passenger floorboards down...I almost dropped the bike at the stop sign. Due to passenger boards hittin my calfs. (I am 5'-8")  It took a while find a solution since..they only rotate up and forward.  The solution is to switch the left and right side passenger floorboards !!

The sheild engraving will now be rearward instead of forward. By doing this you gain several inches of space in which to place your feet when at a stop. In fact enough space to walk the bike without hittin your calves. See picture.

greshdw, I made a post about this sometime in late 2008 regarding my 09SEUC. What a difference when switched from side to side.(At 5'9" this made a huge difference to me.)Some guys switched the footboards around so they would look the same as stock, but I left mine like you did.  Also you can get at the screws on the clutch cover much easier. Although I hate to do it I will admit it was my wife's idea. She seems to look at mechanical things a different way then I do. It happened last week when the air conditioning compressor on my Ford Truck was completely loose because of a broken bolt, but that is another story. I've been fighting with those footboards for the last six weeks when I got the scoot myself. It just dawned on me day before yesterday to do the switch, what a difference. Sometimes the solution to a problem stares you in the eye and makes you feel just plain stupid...

Gentlemen.....I hate too admit it, but it was college age daughter that saw me struggling....that suggested I make a switch. ......duh!!!  (who's paying for whom to go to college?).  ::)

I changed mine after reading cahdbiker's post. Did it to get bsr away from heat plus it's more comfortable for her.

Uh, now why didn't I think of that?  My '08 was driving me crazy digging into my calf all the time, so the dealer removed the stop pin to allow for complete movement - forward & backward, which solved the problem.

I don't normally carry a passenger so it wasn't a big concern for me, but I'm wondering how much of your BSR's feet actually sits on their floorboards with them further back?

Issue revisited:

First I unbolted the Main Mounting Arm Assemblies as complete units, cleaned the Allen head mounting bolts of residual loctite with a wire wheel, applied blue loctite and reinstalled on the opposite sides and re-torqued.  Next I removed the Footboard Support Bolts and Brackets, cleaned the Allen head mounting bolts of residual loctite again with a wire wheel.  Reversing the Footboard Supports and Footboards realigns the Bar and Shields to match the front floor boards and patterns.  This takes no more than 30 minutes time and is well worth the effort required to complete this project.  It is nice to be able to make an improvement without having to spend any money, only a small amount of my time and a few drops of blue loctite.

What does your wife think about the floorboards being so far back?

As I mentioned a while back, it gets her feet away from some of the heat and we have gone on some several trips and no complaints.

Wow, several trips with no complaints and all it took was a floorboard reversal? What do you recommend for car roadtrips?  ;D  :nervous: Ha

I do not believe it will be a problem as others have mentioned, but I have no experience with passengers.  My wife decided years ago she was no longer interested in back seat traveling.  I have had my bike since April 2011 and not a single butt has sat on the rear seat.  I will say it is much better when you come to a stop and place your feet on the ground.  The passenger boards have always been a bother that I just lived with.  Not anymore!  LOL

Geeezeee guys, this is really so simple.....  :confused5:

The passenger needs room, especially if the have long legs, you can't reverse the floorboards. umm I love long legs!  Sorry got distracted  :drink:

So the answer is so simple it it always overlooked.

You dont know what it is?

The rider needs longer legs.  Oh, sorry, that's me @ 6'4"  don't know what the rest of you are going to do  :nixweiss:

Sklywag, the taller your are the sooner you know it is raining. Wish I was a little taller. At 5'9" it can be a little struggle with the little woman on the back and luggage, but so far so good. She is a good non complaing passenger except she would like me to stop more often. CAHDBIKER
