The Guyz Ride.....
« on: September 17, 2011, 11:45:18 PM »

Andy came over to Elk Grove yesterday, V-Diddy-Van got here last night and Jeff arrived about 6:45 a.m. this morning.

We left my home at 7:00 a.m. and rode back roads to Auburn, Ca. where we stopped for breakfast.

After breakfast....we got in I-80 and headed up to Colfax.  In Applegate, on the west side of I-80 (down hill side of the freeway) we counted 8 CHP working a speed trap with radar.  :o   Once we got to Colfax, we left the freeway and got on Iowa Hill Rd. (one lane with total switchbacks)...

Priscilla, the owner of Iowa Hill Store (that's really a bar), built a tee-pee for her grandchildren behind the bar....

And Dancin Dan came strolling up after being down in the canyon mining for the past few days.  He found a nugget.  The ol'timers that were all gathered round the bar are all miners......they guessed it to be about $400-$425 nugget.  First time I actually saw or touched a raw nugget straight out of the ground......they really are shiney in their natural state.

On this road, these kind of signs are the norm.  When we stopped in Georgetown (another ol' gold mining town) my bike had 203 miles on the clock and I put it 5.67 gallons (somebody else can do the math......but I'm happy with getting over 200 miles on the tank at high elevation).

Since Andy and V-Diddy-Van had never been on this road before, we stopped a lot for them to take in the views.  This is the kind of road that when you're riding you want to give it your first priority because it's a long, long way to the bottom.

We rolled into Coloma, Ca. (where John Marshall first discovered gold in Sutter's Mill in 1849 and that started the California gold rush) about 3:30 p.m. and we stopped for lunch....out on the patio in back....

and the sign on the window......

Nice day, great ride with good friends.....and while I was off riding with the guys today, my wife was at home being creative.....

Looks like a wonderful day trip you enjoyed.

Great scenery, and thanks for sharing some awesome photos.

Any chance you could post the roads ridden for future reference?

Thanks!

Here's a link to a ride report that has a map.......  http://www.pashnit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21&highlight=Iowa+Hill   A lot of good clear pics in that thread.  You can do a search on this forum (Iowa Hill or Mosquito Ridge) I've posted many, many photos of this route.

However, there are so many little roads back in there and many don't even have a name sign.  Basically, it's I-80 to Colfax then to Iowa Hill, Sugar Pine Resavoir and Foresthill.  From Foresthill just take Mosquito Ridge Rd. to French Meadows Resavoir, Stumpy Meadows Resavoir and on into Georgetown.  Be sure to top off your tank in Colfax!

We almost learned that one the hard way yesterday......203 miles on the tank of gas and at altitude. :o

Here's another thread I found for Mosquito Ridge portion of the ride......
