Just FYI ... there is a new "breed" of Class D amps on the market.

So far I have only seen them branded by Hertz and Polk, others may follow. From what I have read - the industry is welcoming them on a positive note. Seems to be very clean power (read- MASSIVE power) in a foot-print close to the JL XD series. They are also extremely flexible from a system configuration stand-point. Might be worth a look. Interesting enough, while both the Hertz and the Polk design seem to be based on the same amp, Hertz rates their amp at 150w x 4ch into 4 ohms, Polk rates their amp at 125w x 4ch into 4 ohms.

Conversely ... Hertz rates their amp (HDP-4) at 250w x 4ch into 2 ohms while Polk rates their amp (PA D4000.4) at 200w x 4ch into 2 ohms. Either way ... I'm sure these are pretty sweet amps. For install in the batwing, I would give the nod to the Polk (physical dimensions only). I'll go out on a limb and say the performance between the Hertz and the Polk cannot be discerned by the human ear. I like the Hertz for the top panel adjustments, I like the Polk for the physical size. I also like the Polk for price, although "service after the sale" may come into play. I've dealt with Hertz (stellar) - have no info on Polk. Not to say Polk is bad, I just have no history with their Customer Service folks.
I would say that both of these amps (certainly the Hertz) effectively "double" the marketing of the J&M 500w offering. These are a 1000w systems :bananarock: (from a marketing perspective anyway!) Who's gonna be the first to install?   ( ;) )

I upgraded my entire system last winter. Apline marine grade head unit with removeable face plate. Hawg Wired four in your face package (300 watts and 4 speakers), a pair of Focal polyglass 6x9 speaker in the saddle bag speaker lids and a JL Audio amp 400-4 (like the one picuted above) in the saddle bag. Awesome sound even at 140 KMS.

Remove your Harley HK radio, send it to www.ironcrossaudio.com for the pre-amp RCAs to be brought out, bypassing the HK radios normal amplifier circuits ,,,,,

then purchase the J&M 500w 4-channel amp ,,, the most powerful motorcycle amplifier available, with 4 various configurations available http://www.jmcorp.com/SeeProducts.asp?PF=45  ,,,,,,

go direct from the RCAs on the radio, to the RCA inputs on the J&M amplifier ,,,

then purchase the J&M ROKKERs series speakers all the way around (((amp will power 4, 6 or 8 speaker Harley bagger audio configurations)) ,,,,,

slide in a properly recorded CD and you will have one of the best performing bagger systems you or your friends have ever heard ,,,,,

I had the arc 125.4 amp installed this weekend with the factory hk headunit. The installer had to space the speedo and tach out in the fairing to make it fit. Is there a solution to get the gauges pushed back into the dash like they should be?

The installer should have trimmed about 1/2" from the back of the black gauge mounts. Are you saying he just pushed the gauges out of their socket and left them there?  That's a scary thought!

They are pushed out and siliconed into place. Looks tacky and I figured there was a way to fix it.

As previously mentioned, the plastic cups that secure the speedo and tach need to be trimmed to provide more room for the amp.  Here's a link to the installation instructions for the J&M 500W amp (that's based on the 125.4) describing what needs to be done:

http://www.jmcorp.com/pdf/JAMP-500HC06-UL----RV06-22-2011.pdf

See page 3, step 10 and figure F.

Also, take and post some pics of the amp installed.  I'd especially like to see pics of the right side fairing bracket;  Eastside HD sells a replacement bracket with a hole in it for running wires to/from the amp 125.4, so I'd like to see how your installer ran the wires on the right side (left side when looking at the bike from the front) of the amp.

OMG, this guy was a moron. I'd be nervous about the rest of the job, if he totally disregard that step.

TIF2,

Maybe me.  Do you know if amps of those dimensons will fit under the fairing with an aftermarket head unit?  From others' installs, it looks like amps up to 2" thick will fit, but what about max width and depth?  That Polk unit intrigues me...

Best,
Dave

Hello JMJohn.

I really like this set up and i am thinking of going with the ROKKER 500w kit but i notice when i went to ask about it that J&M does not sell tweeters to fit the small holes on the CVO SG. Do you use the same tweeters that are in there?

Hey Dave

If you look at the dimensions of the JL 400/4 amp (which is a known fit with an aftermarket hewad unit) and combine that with the Arc 125.4 (which is a known fit), you get ~max dimensions of an amp as follows (with, of course, and aftermarket H/U). I've put dimensions as common reference for LxWxH where length is ftom left-to-right across the top of the factory H/U:

JL 400/4 = 8.52" (L) x 7.09" (W) x 2.05" (H)
Arc 125.4 Mini = 11.60" (L) x 5.15" (W) x 1.70" (H)

So the max amp area with using the Alpine or Kenwood aftermarket units (others may work as well) shoild be approximately:

11.50" (L) x 7.00" (W) x 2.00" (H)

Looks like the Polk should fit easily (for ease of install you may want to contact Eastside Harley for their fairing brackets). Remember though, when dealing in max values, it doesn't leave alot of room for errors/variances in published data (measurements) so the polk may still be a tight fit. It's close enough that I would give it a go but it may present a few hurdles that have yet to be encountered.

Good luck and let me know if I can help!

TIF2,

Thanks for your help.  Looking at the Polk vs. the JL X400/4 that LoneWolf installed, the Polk has its wire terminals on the most lengthy end, where the JL has its terminals on the least lengthy (greater width) side.  I think I like my chances with the JL, especially since LoneWolf already successfully installed his, so I think that's probably how I'll go.  I also liked his choice of the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X995, although I'm a little skeptical it'll last since it's not a marine deck. For me, it's between the Kenwood and the Alpine CDA-9886M and I think the Kenwood is much more full-featured (HD radio built in, Pandora and Bluetooth to name a few).   Unless anyone can recommend otherwise, I'm leaning toward Polk's MM6501 component speakers for my upper fairing and Polk MM651 coaxials for the lowers, and Biketronics install kit for the hand controls (w/ AVC).

Thanks again,
Dave
