Anybody bring bike along w/motorhome ?
« on: September 22, 2011, 01:21:39 PM »

Planning to purchase a big motor home and spend some time sightseeing & visiting friends & family around the country (not getting any younger, so why not now ? ) whilst making a point to be in more hospitable warm climates for my arthritis (and riding) during winter months.

Must bring one of my bikes along for the journey, so just curious if any forum members bring your bike along with you when RV-ing , and by what means you bring it ? (i.e.; trailer, toter/carrier, or one of those way cool motor coaches with the "slide bike into cargo bay feature" , etc. & so forth)

What do you consider to be the pros & cons to your method of bike transport ?

Although I am considering a nice enclosed trailer, I am particularly interested in means which require no trailer.

Thanks in advance for any advice or input.

I have had an RV & enclose trailer and have had a lot of fun  :2vrolijk_21: . One thing to consider is :

If you trailer you are restricted to slower speeds  55 mph

Toybox or garage in the back of the RV, you do not have to obey Trailering speed laws  ;D

That's the way I have looked at it .

I am really interested to see if anybody is running anything similar to this :

http://www.jonesrv.com/html/rv_motorcycle_lifts.html

I saw one similar that had an enclosure for the bike, it was included with motor home for sale but there was no info. in ad on manufacturer and RV is no longer listed.

When I was in Milwaukee for the 100th anniv. in 2003 I had an opportunity to see a mid engine Travel Supreme.  It has a garage under the bedroom at the back of the motorhome.  The one that they were demonstrating was a top of the line and over $300k.

Here's a you tube video on one that looks like there base model and a bit newer....

and a quick google search brings these up.....  http://www.mhsrv.com/other-rvs-for-sale/travel-supreme-rv/travel-supreme-mid-engine-rv/

Let us know what you end up with.....and if you make it out to Calif. give us a heads up.....we can show you around this great state! :2vrolijk_21:

Some nice motorhomes with garages.  IMHOP this is the only way to go.  I had a fifth wheel toyhauler when we raced motocross and we had a blast with it.
Don't think the garage is a waste of space...when the bike is not in it you will use it all the time.  It is great to have a big mudroom/indoor patio.  The real beauty is not dealing with a trailer.
For me a hydraulic lift would be a must...just drive on a flat surface put the kick stand down, get off and ride the lift up to the garage, roll the bike in...NO ramps no mess.
3 over and 3 down has the lift I would want.

Has a Quad sitting on it.

I will add this, I saw a motor home at a dealership yesterday that I really liked. Although I'm looking at used, this was a new 2011 priced just slightly above my budget for a good used one and  the interior layout was exactly what I'm wanting, the exterior colors I liked, it had the right engine & trans ......I was seriously considering cornering the salesperson, then I noticed a little emblem on the side that said "a Berkshire Hathaway Company" .

If Warren Buffet thinks that I am "not paying my fair share" , I certainly won't be adding to his share ! Scratch that one and any other RVs from  Berkshire Hathaway owned entities !!! .......still looking

As I remember around $250K and Up if you buy factory built, guys I know that have them built them and call them Toterhomes as they can tote their bikes or what ever in the back garage area.

A typical RV diesel-pusher Toy Hauler will run you about $225-275K.   One of those custom Cobra Motor Homes, depending on how you outfit it and what "perks" you want to add, can go anywhere from about $350K and up.  I've seen some of them in the $1M area and are absolutely beautiful inside and out and have everything but an automatic nose picker coming out of the steering wheel. (that a $2K option  ::) )
