Flat on rear wheel!
« on: September 22, 2011, 02:33:19 PM »

OK, all the signs and stars were aligned: been "thinking" the HOG roadside assistance was a great deal!; plugs and pump were safely stowed somewhere in the garage; middle of nowhere in late afternoon with bride on back ...  flat on rear.

First some observations, might be of use to others.  Was bopping along around 80 mph on interstate and crossing a bridge when I began to notice what felt like a high speed wobble begin, heading to a real tank slapper.  Slowly (perhaps the key) eased off as the wobble became more radical and headed for side of road.  Could then hear the sound of the flat on the back.  Could have been really nasty had I "panicked" and slowed or turned more abruptly.  Hate to think about it if I had been in the twisties!  Anyway, rear tire was flat; recalled avoiding most of the debris in the road earlier but ovbiously had picked up and thrown a nail/screw etc.

OK middle of nowhere and feeling pretty screwed!  A great Samaritan had seen what happened and had stopped on his way home from a long day of work!  He had a compressor kit and offered it to me!  It had a slime like can and an electric pump.  Stayed and helped me get it on the valve stem etc but couldn't get it to seal!  Finally left to pick up his little girls which he was now late for...  Thanks goodness for really nice guys!

Eventually got the leak on the bottom and the sealant began to work enough to pressure up the tire.  Made it 4.5 of the 5 miles to the nearest Wally-world where I got some walley-worms to plug it, re-air and nervously make it the final 100 miles home.  Quite a kludged up affair but I understand god loves idiots or something like that...

Been reading about plugs and flats and have a few unsolicited comments:

1) CO2 cartridges are small and when they are gone, well your in trouble.  Would never depend on them for the only solution - carry a pump!

2) have yet to see slime or the like to actually fix a flat.  In this case it sealed enough to air up the tire and make it about 4 miles.  Enough in this case.

3) finally, a flat on a bike really leaves you screwed, especially if you have set the stage properly with no preparation!  Middle of nowhere with Princess along (get luckier with "princess" than "bitch"  :pepper:) options are really limited!

Now on to the debate to plug and ride or plug and toss...  Frankly, the effects of the rear flat on the bike were very serious and could have ended much worse. Fortunately, I have screwed up enough in the past to know not to do anything abrupt and my bride also is very stable (well on the bike  ::)).  Although I hate to pitch a tire with so much tread left, I am afraid that is my decision.  Don't even want to think about a flat on the front or in the twisties!

I now vow to sign up for roadside assistance, find and carry pump and plugs, and help the next distressed person regardless of how busy or late I may be.

Cheers,

Rusty

Glad it all worked out well - no injuries!  As for the tire, toss it.  No matter how much tread is left it is not worth the chance of injury to you or your princess.  And a new tire is still much cheaper than a trip to the ER.   :2vrolijk_21:

New tire, it's just not worth taking a chance for two hundred bucks. Your bike is worth more, your life and your other half's life are priceless.

Have to agree.  Just not worth the risk no matter how small.  I suspect one could take the tire off, patch it from the inside and be off ... but still just not worth it.  Very lucky to have brought it to a safe stop as it was.  Don't want to try it again.

get rid of the tyre under all circumstances.

One of our folks some years ago suffered a flat rear tyre in St. Petersburg, Russia where no spare tyres were availiable at that time (2003). He made it back home with it (1.300m) but the other day found the tyre deflated again in his garage.

Lately we bought this little compressor, already had to use it once for a friends bike, worked perfect.

Glad you made it home OK. I added the wheel and tire protection package to my extended warranty.  Paid for itself when we were at the Springfield mile last year.  Great service from the (very busy) local dealer.

Yep. on a tubeless tire the plug kits are a saver, they aren"t designed for the long haul but ive limped home a number of times with them.

I stopped buying any touring bike that had laced wheels and a tube for this very reason. (now I understand you can get laced wheels with tubeless tires)

I always carry plugs and goop and a small compressor.

Plug
Ride
and get new tire asap.

It hurts to throw away a nearly new tire, my youngest record is less than 2000 miles.

Normally carry a "stop & go" patch kit with the mushroom like plugs.  Some BMWr's claim they can fix and ride on and not exchange.  Still way too much exposure to injury and hassle to take a chance.

Considering the tire & wheel insurance, and perhaps extended warranty.  If I would have had it this time would have paid for itself, of course >:(  Problem with consumer insurance is they make a pretty good return on it and that means the odds of it being a good deal is slight.  Can actually self-insure and probably come out ahead; wouldn't change my life style if I did have a covered problem and had to pay for it myself.  Now road-side assistance might be another thing and the HOG $20 package looks like a great deal.

Cheers

Had a front flat 2 up last year and was happy that I had the mushroom plug kit, and that another rider had a small compressor.  Plugged and rode to the nearest dealer to replace the tire.  Bought the small compressor as well just in case...

I always carry a small compressor and a plugging kit.  I've needed it three times on my last couple of bikes.  I have the Tire and Wheel warranty on every bike and all I do is take the bike into the dealership and the only cost to me is the time I lost by being in the shop getting the tire replaced.  For me the T&W has paid for itself.

beniemc,  a company whose email is sporttour.com( 866-761-0936 / 513-733-0936 has some great prices on Dunlop Amerian Elite for your Ultra. I had one delivered too my door for $185.90. Before I ordered I talked to a tech at dunlop  named Rob at Dunlop Consumer Affairs, 800-845-8378. According to his email the American Elite can be used with the Dunlop front tire. CAHDBIKER
