Rear tire for '10 SEUC
« on: September 23, 2011, 12:42:15 PM »

Confused about tires for the bike.  Need new rear to replace plugged one.  OE was the Dunlop 408 (?) which appears to only be available through HD dealer.  Found a Dunlop Amer Elite in proper size at Dennis Kirk for significantly less that reviewers claim is the same tire but not rebranded with Harley...

Can anyone confirm or deny it is the same tire?  Also have seen something about Dunlop E3 on site?

Finally, it appears all are bias ply.  Are there radial replacements?  Of course, wouldn't mix f/r but I thought the days of being tossed around my longitudinal ridges were a thing of the dark past.

TIA

I can't swear that the American Elite is the exact same tire as the H-D branded D407, but it does have the same dual compound tread and tread pattern, as well as the same dimensions (width, diameter, etc.).  Many others have claimed it is the same tire without the H-D branding, but unless you have a good contact at Dunlop I don't know how you could verify that.

Regardless, the American Elite is a recommended replacement per the Dunlop catalog (see attachment).

Thanks for the reply and info.  Dealer had 20% off and still recovering from the ride so took the easy way and had them swap out the rear.  Ran right at $300 but never claimed to ride for economy.

Just talked to a friend who's sister was almost killed on a BMW LT when the rear tire went down and they didn't successfully come to a stop.  As squirrely as my stop was, a new tire is cheap.

Cheers,

Ralford, I just had an American Elite delivered to my door for $185.90. from a company called sporttour. I have commented about this before.  I talked to a guy named Rob at Dunlop and he said it is just as good as the original and is compatable with the Dunlop 408. (I have this in writing because of his email back to me). My local dealer will install it on the bike for $78.00. Rob said the American Elite tires are made in the USA and tested here. That was instrumental in my choice plus my dealer wanted $240 for a rear replacement for the Elite or the original tire. The tread pattern is a little different than the original tire. I checked the specs on the dunlop web site (dunlopmotorcycle.com) and the specs for tread depth. 10/32, diameter.25.33, load capacity, 1019 lbs @ 42 PSI is are the same for both tires. My original rear is just about gone at just under 13K almost always two up. So hopefully I will get a little better mileage out of this new tire.CAHDBIKER

apparently you already took action on this situation, thus my underrated two pesos isn't required, yet I shall opine for future reference nonetheless :

Throw any Dunlop product in the garbage where it belongs and get yourself some Avons , after experiencing the improved ride & handling you'll never own another Dunlop !
