2009 Ultra Classic Suspension
« on: September 25, 2011, 06:03:50 PM »

I have a 2009 Screaming Eagle Ultra Classic, bought it used with 2K miles, prior owner wanted a bike with more bling, ya right. I have put approximately 17K on the bike. Initial ride was stiff and jaring. I have short legs, installed 3/4" HD lowering rear shocks and front springs, did not affect the ride, still rode like a rigid frame. I installed race tech shocks recommended by HD and friends that had them installed, ride is still back jarring! I also own a 03 Road King, the 03 Road King ride is many times better than the 09 Ultra Classic. I have rode other HD Ultra Classics, ride is much better. Any help, recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Check the air pressure in the rear shocks if thy still are stock. Lower the air pressure to see how it rides or replace with a choice of excellent aftermarket shocks.

You probably shouldn't compare a 2009 Touring model to earlier editions, since the entire frame was changed for 2009.  If you want a valid comparison, ride another 2009 Ultra.  A more rigid frame can change the ride characteristics significantly.

Before blaming the shocks, make sure you are setting the preload correctly.  Preload does not directly affect the stiffness of the springs, it is used to adjust the length of the shock when the bike is loaded.  For example, let's say you have a shock with 3" of total travel available.  You want to adjust the preload so that the bike sags when you place your normal load on it (bike, rider, luggage, passenger, etc.) only a certain percentage of the total travel.  For this example, let's say you want to let the bike sag 1.2" of the total travel, leaving 1.8" available to absorb bumps before bottoming out.  With the rear wheel off the ground, measure the length of the shock from eye to eye.  Then with the bike back on the ground and your normal load on it, have someone measure the eye to eye length of the shock again.  The difference is your preload.

If you were to do as many have, you might assume that running minimum air pressure or spring preload would lower the bike and make it ride softer.  Well, it may lower the bike a little but it will make it ride much harsher since it will be bottoming out often on relatively minor bumps.  This becomes even more critical when you substitute shorter shocks, since they have less total travel available.

btw, I forgot to mention that you need to know the total travel of the shock.  The manufacturer should have those specs so you don't have to remove the spring to measure the actual shock travel.

Good Morning, yes I agree do not compare the 03 to the 09, one of the reasons I bought the 09 was the new frame, it was more of a comment than comparison. Thank you for your information, you have provided me with some new infomation, thank you!

jerry.wilkins, on my 09SEUC I also put on the shorter HD shocks and had the seat sculptured to lower the  overall height because of my short inseam. I weigh about 200lbs and I think my bike rides kind of rough compared to my 95 Heritage which still has the original shocks. However, I  just noticed that one of my shocks is leaking oil so if not covered under warranty I will replace them both with the originals which only have 2k miles on them. If I find that it rides smoother I will let you know. Also when I have a passenger and luggage and set the air to 45-50 lbs the bike seems to ride pretty nice, and it does corner well with the newer style frame. Good Luck with your situation. I was just wondering if the shorter HD shocks have less travel then the stock ones. CAHDBIKER

Good Morning CAHDBIKER, Just got my bike back from Race Tech, new rear shocks and front suspension. Bike rides great, brought it back to closer height. I will be doing the sculptured seat adjustment also. Bike rides and handles som much nicer, use to wash out in deep corners, hold on for mister tolds wild ride! Race Tech has done a great job, would recommend them to anybody that wants a nicer all around ride!!!

Good Afternoon Cyril, let me go back a little bit, when I first got the CVO I installed HD lowering air shock and front springs, I noticed right off the bat it rode significantly rougher, as we know loss of travel. I went to Race Tech, installed rear shocks that were also lowered, not a big difference, still rough. Went back to Race Tech, Race Tech raised rear shocks to almost stock, installed their front fork system also to almost stock height. What a difference in the ride and handling. My mind is telling me I should have difficulty touching the ground, but I don't, hard to explain, bike just sits different and I like it! I am not the most techy person, sorry!

Cyril, yes they are stiffer, increased the handling considerably.
