Guam, USA Ride 16 Sep 11
« on: September 26, 2011, 09:45:24 AM »

Work took me to Guam for a week and we had an extra day (Friday) so we rented five bikes at Guam HD. in ASAN and rode south around the southern shore and up the eastern shore to Jeff's Pirate Cove for a late lunch.  The ride out was in rain but still breathtaking along the coast with some spectacular views along the way.  The ride back was sunny and again very enjoyable.  One of our team, Mark Foley (markfoleyproductions.com) has a vidiography business on the side and he made this short video from the trailing Sportster.  Enjoy, Beemer!

Guam is a beautiful little island.  I spent almost 4 years there.  It's a 55 mile trip around the island, with all sorts of side roads to explore.  The bad thing about Guam's roads is it rains somewhere on the island everyday.  The road surfaces are made with crushed coral in the compound.  Even though the coral is crushed, it's still alive and embedded in the road.  When it first rains, the water causes the oil that the coral secretes to come to surface and until it is washed away, the road is very slippery.  When I was a motor officer on the Guam DPS, the traffic division sent off a piece of the material used to make the roads, to Northwestern University.  The results that came back said that during the first minutes when the coral oil secretes to the surface, the road was the equivalent of 6" of hard packed snow.  Basically, ice.  Many times I'd just pull normally away from a stop light, after it first started raining, and my rear wheel would just spin.  I investigated many MC accidents that were caused because the Haoles (mainlanders) didn't know how to drive on Guam's roads with car, let alone an MC.

Run over any snakes...?

As a matter of fact....ALMOST!!!  One was coiled in the middle of the road...not sure if it was dead or just waiting for some unsuspecting CVO'er to come close enough...I swerved waaaaay around it.  The other guys said there was another around 5' that was definitely dead but I missed that one.

Both were gone on our return trip :nixweiss:

Yup, it was slippery.  We were well warned by the owner of Guam HD...he said the bikes didn't mean chit...they could be replaced...nice guy.

BTW...the bikes cost $50 for the day

Beemer – great video.  I spent 6 months TDY on Guam in 1972 during Operation Linebacker when we bombed then North Vietnam.  Your video has a lot of unfamiliar places but some are the same.  Talofofo Falls and the fresh water caves for example never change.  Oh yeah, I remember how slick the roads were when it rained.

vtyanqui,

I remember back around 1980, when I was stationed at Mather AFB CA, my ground school instructor had many home movies he'd made while stationed in Guam a few years before.  In one, they found a piece of rusty steel sticking straight up on a remote beach.  It was about two feet in length.  They started digging around it's base to see what it was and to their surprise it was a main landing gear strut from an aircraft!  They uncovered the whole wing and when done they found it still contained its machine guns and ammunition!  They did some further exploring in the immediate area and discovered the motor about 100 yards out in shallow water.  To the casual observer it looked like just another big chunk of coral.  They figured the aircraft cartwheeled in and broke apart sending pieces everywhere.  The rest of the plane and possibly its pilot may still be a few feet away in the jungle but as you know, it is so dense, you'd miss it if you didn't trip over it.  There is still many things in those jungles waiting to be discovered...some not too safe as in unexploded ordinance...as well as the critters who call the jungle home!

I'm blessed in that after spending more than 30 years in the Air Force, I still get to go TDY to many of the bases I was stationed at as well as ones I hadn't.  Guam is one of the latter and it's my second TDY there in two years.

Last year they didn't rent bikes but shortly after we left, they started.  We had a 2006ish Road King, 07 Street Glide, 09 Heritage Soft tail, 08 Soft Tail Standard and a 89ish "bulletproof" Sporty!  I chose the Soft Tail Standard since I'd never rode one and I always talk smack about skinny front tire'd bikes...I wanted to at least talk from some experience.  It was a mistake choosing a bike I wasn't familiar with.  With the rain, coupled with my assumptions about skinny tires and their lack of grip in corners when being pushed by a heavy bike made for some moments of elevated pucker factor.  That aside, we still had a BLAST!

Beemer – Glad to hear you guys had such a great time on Guam.  It’s remarkable how long pieces of plane can survive in the acidic jungle atmosphere.  I never did any searching for ACFT while TDY to Guam but as the AF Negotiations Officer working in Hanoi (87-89) I spent many a day and night regarding the excavation of crash sites in the jungles of North Vietnam.  I can’t tell you how long metal and boot leather (soles) can survive in a preserved state. Unexploded ordnance was always a problem for us but fortunately we had an EOD specialist on our team and once bombs were located and detonated we could continue with our excavation (which was more like archaeological dig).  Currently, there are no more TDYs for me but I still work for the AF as a contractor instructing aircrew members how to fly the B-52.
