BIG motors, lower gearing?
« on: September 26, 2011, 02:35:07 PM »

Some are putting in lower gearing (popular 30T pulley and belt) yet have more than enough torque to pull stock gearing.
I know of one right now going to the 120 Harley motor and leaving stock gearing (2012 FLH).
My own personal thoughts are to STILL use the lower gearing with higher horsepower motors.
Reason, for me anyway, I rarely cruise more than 80-85 on the road, and the lower gearing is in my bike's "sweet spot"
Even my older stroker has the lower gearing and I LIKE IT!
When you pass, you will STILL have enough torque to get the job done, and I have never run up to the rev limit riding this way.
Do some of you actually do your shifting at the limiter??

We just built a 124"er 11.0 cr/110" heads w/2.120" intakes/Wood 9F/62mm HPI/Bassani staggered duals in a softail.
He wanted a BDL open belt as well.
Their ratio is 3.37 with that belt conversion.
You have to hang on tight to this one, and as a matter of fact, he has said it was much more than he was looking for. :nervous:
Probably could pull some gear outa' that one, but for the most part I agree. :)
Makes the engine pull effortlessly, with the proper overall ratio.

I did the 30T on my 2011 SESG, then a couple months later added more power with Fullsac's stage II. The gear change, for me, was mostly because of having to ride the clutch for so long at parking lot speeds and off the line. I am extremely pleased with the outcome. The additional seat of the pants power is a very nice byproduct as well. Thanks again to everyone on this site for all the info.
