Dunlop D408 direction
« on: September 27, 2011, 11:46:47 AM »

I just purchased a Dunlop D408 front tire from the local MOCO. The directional arrows on the tire obviously show which direction to mount it. Looking at the new bikes on the floor and at pictures of new bikes, the tire runs the opposite direction of the one I bought. WTF????

The correct direction for the front tire is exactly opposite of the direction that the rear tire rotates. Sounds like the dealership has some incorrectly mounted tires (or your's is incorrectly mounted).

Steve,

This was a huge issue on the 2009 bikes when HD went to the D407F and D407R on the touring bikes.  The tires cupped horribly.  Dunlop then came out with a D708F in an attempt to rectify the issue.  Here is my horror story:  New SERG Front Tire " Warranty" Replacement.  See reply #11 for Dunlop's e mail to me.

Can't say why you observed "Looking at the new bikes on the floor and at pictures of new bikes, the tire runs the opposite direction of the one I bought."  I have not seen this but maybe this explains it:

The D408F runs in the opposite direction of the D407R.  The story I got here on our boards is that is the way it was originally designed but HD insisted the tires be in the same direction for aesthetic purposes.  The follow up to the above thread is that I got 17K miles out of the new set, D408F and D408R and probably could have gone farther but I was leaving on a trip...

     Hope this helps.

How about a picture of your's so we can tell if it's right or not?  The attachment is from an official Harley photo showing the current orientation of the tread.  Yours should match if it's mounted correctly.

I was under the impression that the 408 tread pattern is just opposite the pattern on the 407.  All else the same.

DO NOT mount with the arrow going the wrong way no matter what the tread does. Follow the arrow....

Doesn't say much about the functionality of the tread design  :confused5:

GK,
Great information on the post you have here. The last comment in your post on Dunlop admitting that the tread was backwards explains much. I will leave my tire alone and see how long it lasts. Once again, THANK YOU.....
