HELP - Installed Heavy Breather and now it smokes like a dog
« on: September 30, 2011, 03:26:20 PM »

2009 stage II 103 on an 09 Street Glide........ I installed a Heavy Breather and now it smokes like a dog. White smoke out both tail pipes and some out of air intake after shut off.... Is it possible I screwed up the install or has the motor just taken a crap?

Are you sure you used the correct breather bolts? Failure to use them causes all kinds of bad things to happen.

I used the stock bolts out of the regular SE air cleaner.

Been awhile but on my 09 SERG3 I used the bolts that came w/ the bike. Mistake. Need to use non-SE breather bolts.

Correct!

Also see here:  NEW Heavy Breather Throttle Body Cover. That may be your issue but it sounds like you have the wrong breather bolts.

I'd also guess that you have the wrong breather bolts.  See the attachment, from the installation instruction sheet.

You guys were dead-on. I had used the two bolts from the SE breather. When I pulled out the original air cleaner, the bolts were very different from the SE bolts I had used. The original bolts match the instruction diagram exactly. Duhhhhh. How did I miss that? Well, putting it back together the right way now, hope I didn't screw upanything using the wrong bolts...

THANKS!!!! jb

You guys were dead-on. ...

.... hope I didn't screw up anything using the wrong bolts...

:coolblue:  Dead on?  Of course we were.  :coolblue:   Seriously, it's amazing the information you can get here.

Doubt you "screwed up anything."  Several of us have done the same thing and learned the hard way.  In fact the earlier instructions said to use the "stock breather bolts."  Of course, the SERG came with a Ventilator A/C which did NOT use the stock breather bolts.  So even though the kit said it fit the SERG, it did not tell you you needed to change breather bolts.  Still I have not heard of anyone who suffered actual damage other than a mess of oil and hurt ego.  Good luck!

OK, no smoke now.....  YaaaHoooooo.... All else being the same, do you think I should run another VTune now that I went from regular SE breather to Heavy Breather?

JMHO but no.  The SE Ventilator is almost the same as the heavy breather in terms of air flow.  So it's hard to see how you'd need a re-tune as long as the bike feels like it's running well.  Very likely a waste of money.  I imagine there is some justification for it.... I just don't think I would.

Isn't the "V-tune" something the end user does? Not to say that it will make a difference but if all it requires is the rider putting his laptop in the TP/Saddlebag and taking a ride then why not? :nixweiss:
