Excessive Oil Consumption
« on: October 01, 2011, 06:39:49 PM »

So ever since I got one of those high tech digital oil temp/level dip sticks I use more oil.....
NO probably not, just makes it more convenient to check the oil.
I am adding at least a quart between oil changes.

I complained to the dealer and they got a bunch of work done under the warranty.
I was told they re-ringed the bike and replaced every seal from the transmission forward.

Less than 300 miles after this work was done, I took off for Maggie Valley.
On the way back from Maggie Valley I checked and it was reading low oil.
I manually checked the dipstick and it was not registering on the stick.
I was less than 100 miles from home and figured I would get a qt at a dealer on the way.
It was Monday and it was closed.  Bike was running very hot so I let it cool for an hour and then road it home.
I picked up 2 qts at a local shop.

I put the 1st qt in and it only came up 1/2 way on the dipstick.

I started up the bike in the garage on my recently painted floor and saw that the exhaust was spitting out oil!!!!

More to follow

So what can cause this?
Do I take it back to the same dealer who I am so fed up with already?

I can list all the parts/work that was done on the last service if it would help someone assist with an answer.

They did replace the piston rings and cut the valve seats.

Thanks for any help!!!

Steve, did I read correctly that originally you were only using a quart of oil between changes?  If so that begs the question of the oil change interval?  If you're using synthetics and doing changes at four or five thousand miles that usage isn't really a problem.  Even being a quart low at 2000 wouldn't worry me a great deal since most of these engines puke out the first half quart almost immediately anyway.  So the actual "usage" would be a 1/2 qt in 2k.

Of course whatever you had before is irrelevant now.  Unfortunately.  Sounds like now you've got some real issues.  Hate to read that.

You said it was "warranty work."  ESP work?  If so I don't know if work under the service plan is transferrable in the same way factory warranty work is.  Obviously a second shop isn't go to rework another shop's job for free.  It also seems doubtful that the ESP carrier is going to willingly pay a second shop for a rework when they'd expect the first shop to cover there own mistakes.

You may be between the proverbial rock and hard place.  Suppose it's worthwhile to at least talk to the first shop and gauge their response.  Based on that have a conversation with the ESP provider before deciding if you need to move on or not.  Royal pain in the ass whatever happens though.  Sorry man.

Well.....my ESP ran out on 9/21 and I purchased a new 1 on 9/15 from what I think will be my next dealer.

So if I go back to the dealer that did the work they are going to know I went elsewhere for the ESP.

Now the fact that I called several places and got the same price from all of them EXCEPT my last dealer who's price was higher than everyone else......

When I brought them the bike I told them I didn't know who to ask for, but I wanted "the guy", the 1 that knows what to do and is conscientious to do what should be done.

Well if I did get that guy, they are in sad shape.
This guy "forgot" to plug in my heated seat....no big deal, but he managed to run the plug between the frame and the body panel.
Yeah he is the guy I want working on my bike.  :soapbox:

So far as the ESP is concerned the servicing dealer is irrelevant.  They pay whomever does the work.  So it shouldn't matter that you bought the service agreement elsewhere to the service department in question.  They'd still get paid for their work.  Of course that doesn't mean they can't get pissy about it anyway.

My concern here is it sounds like a call back.  A re-repair.  And the service contractor likely won't want to pay for that if having the original servicer fix the mistake on their own dime is an option.

Exactly.  Regardless of whether it's factory warranty or ESP, they rarely knowingly pay twice for the same thing, at least within a short time frame.  Often called a come-back repair, the shop that got paid to fix it right and botched the job is expected to fix it on their own dime the second time.  Be prepared to have them try to weasel out of it by claiming a new problem cropped up unrelated to the work they performed previously.

Considering the amount of oil mentioned in the first post, I wouldn't be surprised to find something like rings installed incorrectly or even upside down, or valve stem seals missing or damaged.  Even though it's difficult to convince yourself to take something back to the guys you think screwed it up, it may be your only real option if you don't want to get stuck paying for the repair.  Take it back and see what they say, then if they jerk you around contact the ESP folks and ask them what they suggest.

I find it amazing that the ESP would pay the first time for the small amount of oil consumption you mentioned.  One quart between changes, unless you change oil every 1000 miles, is not excessive at all. :confused5:

Well it definately is excessive now.  2 full qts and it is still low in less than 3000 miles.  :soapbox:

I can't remember, it was eather 2 or 3 quarts between services before the warrenty kicked in when mine went down for oil consumption. it only had 5000miles on it when it went. It burnt over a quart in the last 1000 miles which put me way over the acceptable consumption. Mine was due to egg shaped cylinders and shot valve guides. Did the shop rehone the the cylinders when they reringed it, or even check for them being out of round. also my mileage dropped to 160miles to a tank and that was running on vapor. hope you get it worked out.

Well I finally got the bike back late Sat afternoon.  I hope to put some miles on it Monday. (I have the day off.)

They never gave me a definitive answer to why it was doing what it was doing as they could not find anything specific wrong.

The replaced the piston rings and top end gasket kit again.
They also replaced the cam support plate kit and tappet lifters.
They also opened up the umbrella valve.

When I left the dealer I was reading a solid 42-45 on the oil pressure gauge (Dakota Digital).
This is higher than I have been reading in the last 6K so maybe that is a good sign.

Did they hone the cylinders, or at least check them for roundness?  Sticking rings on there won't do much if the cylinders are out of round.  Do about 20 runs, after the bike is thoroughly warmed up, in third gear, up to about 3500-4000 rpm, then close the throttle and let the engine brake the bike down to 2K rpm, then repeat.  If the rings are going to seat, that will do it.

With your oil pressure reading higher now, my guess is they pinched the "O" ring on the oil pump going into the cases. This would case the motor to sump and cause the excessive oil usage!!!! Just a thought!!!

If they installed stock rings go easy for the first 300 miles then anything goes!!!!!

They told me be kind for the 1st 50......
I put 200 on it today.
I checked the oil cold before I started it.

I will check it later to see if I lost an obvious amount today.
