Awesome setup Gary!!

I really appreciate your posting pics of the JL amp combined with an aftermarket H/U.
You seem to have been bitten by the <audio> bug - there is no known anti-venom (lol).

Amazing how good you can make the bike sound ... yah?

Congrats again ... enjoy it!

Thanks Lone Wolf.  Let us know if you can get the fairing on!!

Does anyone know if the stock saddlebag iPod cable's fairing end has a normal USB plug that will plug into an aftermarket head's  Alpine/Kenwood) iPod USB input?  I suspect, knowing Harley, that it has some kind of proprietary plug that goes into the Harley iPod interface unit, so I'd be SOL trying to use it with the Kenwood that Lone Wolf has installed.

CaptDave,  HD buys connectors from vendors, e.g. Deutsch, Tyco, et al.  And I've never tried to adapt one of those connnectors to a USB connector (i.e. remove a Deutsch or Tyco connector and replace it with a USB connector), but I have changed out a Molex connector and replaced it with a Deutsch connector (when installing the left side handlebar switch harness from a kit HD intended for '07 and newer models and adapting it for use on my '04).  Whether it's worth the trouble to do the conversion or simply buy a compatible harness is another consideration.

Thanks Carl.  Actually, I've been considering what LoneWolf has done...use a flash drive to store my music under my seat and just run a USB cable up the backbone to the new head unit.  The more I think about it, the more I like that idea.

Thanks,
Dave

There is an Anit-Venom. It's called going deaf.  After my upgrades, I have to make a conscious effort to keep the volume at a reasonable level.

Good luck with that, the reasonable level part. Since I upgrade my system last winter (Alpine head unit, 700 watts and 6 speakers) I've always got it cranked. An added bonus is that the stereo is often loader then my illegal pipes and the fine for load music is less then the pipe fine.   :bananarock: :bananarock:

Seriously, afgter my upgrade, I too was cranking it. It was great getting on the highway and jamming away at 75-80mph. However, the next day your ears are ringing. After a couple of days  of this out at Sturgis, my ears started hurting, so it was definitely pushing things. Now, I try to keep it to the L or U max, unless I'm just blipping it up for a song or two. After that I know the next day will not be very comfortable, seriously.

Final install pic -- XM antenna on top of amp.  Blue module on left side of photo is a PAC which allows full use of hand controls.

Lone Wolf, I have just a few more questions if you please:

What "PACs" are you using to give you hand control function, and do you still have AVC?   (I'm thinking of using Biketronics BT1005 install kit for the hand controls w/ AVC).

On your Kenwood, are you having any issues with glare on the display or the display being too dim in sunlight?  I've read quite a few reviews on Crutchfield complaining about this.

Are you worried about water intrusion damage since the Kenwood is not a marine unit?  Biketronics makes a splash cover that might be a good idea for washing the bike.

I think I may go with the same setup you have (Kenwood head and JL amp) with the exception of using Polk MM6501 component speakers in the upper fairing and Polk MM651 coaxials in the lowers.

Thanks a lot!

No Rich, thank you for all your input.  Since I have taken (i.e. stolen) so many ideas from everyone on this sight, the least I can do is give back. LOL

Dave,

At certain angles, the Kenwood is very hard to read because of glare, compounded by the fact that as I get older, my eyes are getting worse.  I would say on a sunny day, riding all day, there would be a 3-4 hour window around noon that you cannot read the display.  It is a glare issue.

As for water intrusion, which was and still is a major concern of mine -- I was looking at a few issues.  Marine units, from what I read, run a little hotter because of the coating so that was a minus since I run in 100+ temps all the time.  I live in California, so the weather/rain is very predictable -- ergo, I don't ever get caught in the rain in California.  My real concern is on the cross country trips.  With that in mind, i am having fabricated a piece of hard plastic that will cover the head unit hole entirely, and i was thinking of using some sort of temporary tape on the windshield seem if I have to run through a bad storm -- I'm not an expert, but it did not seem like there was any water intrusion inside the fairing so I rolled the dice.

Another idea I am still kicking around is to put some sort of plastic sheath over the unit to divert any water that may intrude.

Attached is a picture of the PAC used.  If AVC is the thing that turns down your volume when you slow down, i did not have that installed -- so not sure if it was even an option.  I never used it on the stock as I had it turned off.   Basically, I have 1) volume, 2) channel/track change 3) switch to HD Radio, Aux (Garmin 665), CD and USB (32 Gig flash), and 4) switch to semi mute whereby the music is turned down about 70% (very similar to AVC).

I love having a CD/MP3 player as there is so much music available, i can keep my real favorite riding tunes very easy to access.  The CD player skips more on heavy bumps than stock, but an MP3 disc does not -- i find that interesting.

I have a total of six tweeters as I am using coax speakers on both upper and lower.  The lower speakers i don't really hear unless I lean way back.  The back seat passenger gets all the music.  IMO, it pays to have the extra tweeters if you have clean music running through them --- the Kenwood has a great equalizer and sound processor so they are tuned so that they are not screechy.   Extremely clean sound comes out that does not hurt the ears.

Dave, Sammyj lives in Chicago, and would know more about the rain/water issue since he is the one who told me the JL amp would fit -- I followed his lead.  Gary

FINAL REPORT:  The system rocks!!!!
Pros:  Clean, rich, and loud music.  The display is very easy to read at night, and the multi-colors to choose from allows you to pick which is the best choice at night -- for me, it is blue.  I highly recommend this system.

Con:  CDs skip more than stock on very bumpy roads, but not as much with MP3 discs.  The display on the head unit washes out in the sunlight.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the system.  With this head unit digital sound processing, i highly recommend the six tweeter set-up --
