Stage 1 air filter assy from FuelMoto for my 2010 SEUC with football style cover. I have now replaced the air filter twice-both n/c from FuelMoto but don't know why the center hub breaks out around football cover holdown bolt.
Each element has lasted about one year. The first football cover actually fell off against my leg but caught this one before it broke all the way.
Their instructions say to place the supplied 1/4" washer between the football cover and the element (the instructions that come with their Stage 1 kit).
My wife's bike has the same filter kit and it has not broken out. But her football cover is a little different than mine in shape.
I don't know if I am overtightening bolt or what? Suggestions.
Thanks for any help.
The round SE filter fits the non-CVO style football cover all the way around the edge of the filter, providing full support for the cover. The late model CVO covers have more of a rectangular center section that does not fit the end of the filter properly. So basically what's happening is that the full weight of the cover is being supported mostly by that center nut. The cover is free to vibrate and move enough to fatigue the metal around the center nut, and eventually the thin metal fails. IMHO, adding that washer doesn't help the real issue, which is lack of support around the edge of the filter, and in fact may make it worse.
Try taking the filter and mounting it into the cover (off the bike) with the center nut, then look at the contact between the end of the filter and the cover. You should see what I'm trying to describe, large areas with no contact. The way to fix the problem, assuming you want to retain the CVO cover, is to make the cover fit the end of the filter just like the old style covers, with full support all the way around. You'll need to add some material to the cover to do that. As for the washer they supplied to stick between the cover and the nut, that should only be necessary if there is a large gap between the nut and cover when you press the filter into the cover. A small gap, maybe 1/16", is desireable to put a little tension on the cover to the filter end gasket. A larger gap, however, will cause the nut to pull the center of the thin end plate too much, adding to the possibility of overstressing the thin metal and hastening a failure.
I'm doing a lousy job of trying to explain this, but if you do a search there were several threads about the same issue, some going back to '06 when the new style covers were introduced on the CVO Ultra's. The answer is to fully support the cover like the older style, or replace the cover with an older style, or scrap the whole thing and replace it with something like the Ventilator.
