magnetic tool for removing Faring screws
« on: October 06, 2011, 12:49:29 AM »

I read here some where about a magnetic tool to hold T20 or whatever the number is on the inner faring screws.
Do you know what I am talking about?
Please pass it on to me.
Thanks
Last time I was just real careful not to drop them, but I could see the value of the magnetic holder.

Fairing screws are T25s. A little bit of care when removing them is all that is needed... no need for magnetic gizmos...

You can get a magnetic torx driver at any hardware store, Automotive store, Walmart, Ames supply.com, Home depot etc...... I know because I use them for a living and I am always replacing lost and worn torx bits. The ones on the 09SERG are also T27.

You can get magnetic torx drivers at most any parts store or hardware store - but - I don't use the Torx fasteners.  I install a threaded stud (with locktite), and then use a nut w/magnetic socket...   :2vrolijk_21:

What's the purpose? Beauty? Do you use a chrome acorn nut?

I find it easier to install the nut on a stud than to install the torx fastener...that's all...   :nixweiss:

I do the same thing (use a stud in the lower two holes) and have for many many years.  A socket is over and capturing the nut on removal.  So no screws get dropped in the deep dark hole they seem to fall to.  And for installation the stud is sticking through the hole and is much easier to start the nut on than it is to start the screw and start it straight in what can be a blind hole and a moving target and the outer fairing squirms around a bit.

Are you saying you can't stick the long screw into the blind hole cause it's moving :huepfenlol2:

Sorry to hear that Don......

You're right, of course... I had a brain fart!

I like the idea of putting in threaded studs with a cap nut, to eliminate the Torx screws altogether... Brilliant!

Hey, if you'd ever cross threaded your long screw and fouled up the other side's "insert" you'd think twice about it too ??? !              :huepfenlol2:

No shortage of crossed threads, lost nuts, stripped bolts, or missing screws on this forum.

But once you've missed a screw, lost a nut, crossed a thread, or stripped a bolt, you won't find a more sympathetic bunch of nuts, bolts, or screws to share a thread with either.
