Rear Brakes and Cruise Control
« on: October 06, 2011, 10:43:23 AM »

I have a 09 FLHXI and have a TTS on it I have been playing with tuning my bike...I have a lot of the perimiters turned off but haven't noticed this particular sympton before...
I have cruise control
with the cruise activated I can deactivate it with the press of the front brake
However when I press the rear brake it does not deactivate...
Today I started to trouble shoot some of the simpler things and discovered I have no brake lights on the rear when I push the rear brake pedal...I can press the front brake and get brake lights...I have tail lights
I'm not much on the electrical readings side so with this said I then removed the 2 wires that connect to the rear stop switch and inserted my volt meter in each one and pressed the pedal and discovered I don't have any reading...should I not be reading something as far a volts reading when I press it?
The only thing recently that I have done was replace the battery and installed a heavier diameter cables...
Thanks
paul

Put an ohm meter accross the switch itself with both wires off and hit the brake. A good switch should read less than one ohm. sounds like a bad rear brake switch to me.

Should be some helpful information here:  BRAKE LIGHT PROBLEM. 09 FLTRSE3.

A voltmeter across the two legs of the brake slight switch wouldn't read anything.  To get a voltage reading you'd need to measure across the positiven and negative sides of a circuit.   The switch simply connects the same (positive) together.  It's the same wire going in and coming out.  You could use an ohm meter on the switch (not the wires, but the switch) to see if it's working.

If you don't have a multimeter and want to isolate the wiring from the switch you could still do it easily.  Take a small piece of wire and plug it in to both sides of the socket that would plug on the rear brake light switch.  If the brake lights come on you know the bike wiring is ok and the problem is the switch.

Good call guys
I jumpered the 2 wires together and the rear brake lights activated
I think we have ruled out the and narrowed the problem down to the switch

Good call here I was typing what I had done while you were typing a solution
I think we are all on the same page here...

If you change the switch yourself just remember that switch opens up the hydraulics.  So don't bump the rear brake pedal while the switch is loose or removed.  Change it quickly and don't bump anything and often won't have to bleed the rear brakes.  If at all concerned, however, a quick bleed won't hurt anything.  Even with ABS on the bike you can do a bleed normally as you always would have.

Sounds like a rash of failed rear brake light switches.  A part that for years was almost forgotten because it rarely had to be worried about.  Someone found a cheaper supplier or altered a spec to make it cheaper to buy.

If someone is doing their own the old Accel switches in the aftermarket should still be available.  Might be a worthwhile alternative.

That's what I think. I noticed last night that the rear brake pressure switch is smaller in diameter (about the size of a nickel). I know the old style like you mentioned are about the diameter of a quarter. Looks like they cheaped out and screwed us! I have never had one of the old style go bad! I am going to ask the dealer if that is an option and will definitely put the old style on if it fits!  :2vrolijk_21:

I have changed the Rear brake stop switch and now have rear brake lights...
Have not made time to check the cruise yet to ensure the problem no longer exists...
try and do that this weekend...
Thanks for the help

My ABS light is on steady also. BSR noticed the other day and mentioned it and forgot until I noticed the rear brake pedal did not work the brake light. Dealer told me this morning it may be on cause of the switch. They are going to fix it while I wait in the morning under warrenty of course. I will find out if a old style sw. is an option.
