A question about stereos.
« on: October 08, 2011, 10:22:07 PM »

My old bike '01 Ultra, had a cassette tape deck and aux jack. I loved the tape deck 'cause I could use a tape converter for an extra source. I would run the GPS audio to the cassette deck via the converter, and use the AUX jack for my ipod. All I did was thumb toggle back and forth between the two and it worked great.

My current bike '06 CVO Ultra, has the Harmon Karden stereo with CD Player. It has only ONE Aux jack and no tape player. So I got a splitter for the AUX jack and ran one wire to the GPS, and one to the ipod. Everything works, it's just that the audio is diminished. It's not as loud as I would like.

Is the low volume of the audio the result of using the splitter? Is there a better solution for running two sources?

Thanks

I am pretty sure thats your culprit..   Don't think the audio jack was made for sharing 2 sources, :nixweiss:

Does the sound diminish if you just use the one AUX device or only when you use the splitter? Quality of components could be an issue. Does the AVC turn it up when ambient noise due to motorcycle speed increases?

Personally I only use one AUX cable from the 660 to the AUX to allow phone calls which are bluetooth connected to the 660. I do not need a cable to AUX for the GPS.

I decided it was safer to use a CD with 150 MP3 tracks cut on it so I could control track selection from the Mode switch. The GPS cuts in when there is an update in directions with out the need for the AUX cable.

I have the last lot of the 2011 FLHTCUSE6 CVOs and I am not sure about this, but from what I have read it appears that some folks need a cable from the 660 to the AUX to get sound from the 660...I don't, the 660 cuts into whatever sound I have so I only use the AUX cable for the phone which is blue tooth connected to the 660, it doesn't send the right signal to the NIM so I need to switch to AUX when I see a phone call come in and accept the call that way, maybe mine has a country mod to it..not sure

I have an aud jack installed on the back side of my radio,   We did the HD Dude surgery and it works great.   The only thing is that only one devise works at a time.   I can keep them plugged in but that's all.  Only one on at a time.   You can try that.   Also keeps the area around the radio nice and tidy.   :2vrolijk_21:

A word of caution.

Running more then one device in your Auxiliary input port could be dangerous to your GPS and or IPod health. without getting to technical what is happening with the volume is you are feeding 2 circuits instead of one (the Auxiliary Input on the radio). The loss of volume is due to the additional load seen by the device that is playing. Instead of feeding the entire output of one device to the Auxiliary input of the radio the active device sees the load of the Aux input circuit and the additional load in the output circuit of the inactive device. Now lets add a little voltage and see what happens. An input circuit is designed to look for an input voltage not develop one (as an output circuit does). An output device sends voltage and is not designed to look for voltage. So if both devices have power at the same time both devices have a little bleed voltage on their respective output circuits when they are not producing an output. when you turn one device on the output increases and you are feeding this voltage to the Auxiliary Input Circuit of the radio and the Output Circuit of the other device (which is not designed to handle an input voltage). When one device is active you are sending the voltage from the active device to both the Aux input and the output circuit of the other device, this will cause damage to the output circuits of one or both devices over time.

It is your equipment so I am not telling you not to run two devices this is just a work of caution.

Well I removed the splitter yesterday and am just running on the Zumo 550 GPS. The volume is louder now. Anyway the ipod which is a classic and uses a hard drive kept freezing up due to vibration. I tried mounting it on the handle bar, or the pocket for the lower fairing, but a decent size bump would jar it enough to freeze it. I never had that problem on my '01 becaue I kept it in the tourpack and cushioned and suspended.
