Boom Cans Info Needed
« on: October 13, 2011, 12:28:50 PM »

09 SERG with Fullsack 2" baffles, cat pipe, andrews 54's, gasket, TTS and even changed the gear. I bought a set of boom cans because I really like the way they look. I hope they sound good as well. Anyone have any experience with these slip-ons? Will I be ok without a tune? Doesn't appear that I can do anything with the baffles on these things. Any input from folks that have these would be appreciated. Thanks

Lew......First thing I did was put the Boom cans on my ride with everything else stock....did not need a tune.  Where they attach to the stock (cat) headpipes for about 1-2 inches however, they just started to yellow "very" slightly.  Then I added the V&H head pipes (no cat) and the HB intake....then did need a tune. (didn't yellow either with cooler temps) Nice tone when riding but definately not loud.  Looks great with the long bags.  They always seem to bring comments from the sidewalk crowd.

Thanks Russ I guess I see what happens. I hope they are louder that the fullsac baffles. Would like a little more noise. and i do like the looks. Where is Bishop? I was just out in S.F. and visited with JCZ and had a great time riding the old gold trails!

Personally I like the looks better than the sound....it's not a very "deep" rumble but MUCH better than stock. It is comfortable to ride with even with 1/2 helmets.  If you look for posts by a member "WheelsnKeels" he has a sound bite you can listen to.  Probably was posted 1 - 1/2 years ago tho'

I do clean inside the back of the pipes with Mother's chrome polish and they clean up very easily.  I have heard that someone painted the inside with black heat paint but IMO like the "shiny" inside.

If you look at a Calif map and go due East of San Jose to the Nev border you will find Bishop.  About 250 miles north of LA and 200 miles south of Reno.  Pretty much next door to BFE......

I put a set on my bike too because of the way they looked and listening to Wheelsnkeels sound bite 100 times and was very happy with them until I removed the cat.  I purchased the Jackpot catless head pipe and the Dynotune and it now has a low end torque problem, Im guessing it is from the lack of back pressure.  Once it gets above 2500 rpm it is good to go but less than that, I almost have to Flintstone it to get to go. It does sound amazing though with the cat gone.

Charley did you remove the baffles? I just got mine and I haven't put them on yet but there looks like plenty of baffle in there. I'm wondering if its going to be too quite for me?

I did not remove the baffles and like Westcoastruss stated they do not have the deep rumble, like Rinehart or CFR. I think they were just right with the cat headpipe and are just a little loud for me without the cat.  However, without the cat it makes this awsome growl on decel and gear change that was not audible with the cat installed. And yes, I painted mine black on the inside.

Lew......At one time there were performance baffles for these slip ons.....not sure what "performance" means however.  Someone here a year or so ago had those baffles for sale....maybe Wheels but I'm not sure.  Mine still have the origional baffles.  The catless headpipe is really a good way to cool off this motor.  I am also using TTS to tune the bike and have great torque with the combination I ended up using.  Pulls well from 2100.

I agree, I said 2500, but it is more like 2100 that the bike becomes a beast without the cat! Before the cat removal, I could leave a stop @ idle, but it would not pull like it does now.

Mike,

Invest in the V&H X pipe header.  I had the catless header from a lower 48' state SG and 2" fullsac baffles but when I switched to the "X" pipe, I got a much deeper/richer sound and it is a little louder when I get on it...pretty much all the time.

Make sure you get the one for your year bike...the 09s have bigger O2 sensor bungs and they're in a diferent position than the 2010-on bikes.

I am running that setup on my 09SERG except I have a V&H x pipe. Fullsac stage II map, Andrews 54, Cometic gasket and runs great! I would loose the cat if I were you and reduce some heat while increasing preformance. Good luck!
