Halogen Headlights
« on: October 13, 2011, 05:04:33 PM »

I read a lot of info on this forum about LED and HID headlights but little about halogen.  Is there a recognized superior brand or type that is a direct replacement for stock lighting?  Sylvania markets their lights under the name 'Silverstar'  -  anyone have an opinion pro or con about these?

Just my $.02 but the likely reason you don't see much discussion about halogen is that technology has passed them by.  Here's more than you'll ever want to know from Wikipedia:  Headlamphttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headlamp.  The article describes the advantages of HID and LED over Halogen.

I have used silverstar with my car and was unhappy with lifespan of bulb. I went through two sets and then decided to spend a little more and get PIAA bulbs. Very happy with them. I had one on a Ninja years ago and it too lasted a long time. Go to PIAA website and find your bulb H7, 11 whatever it is and you'll see the different style bulbs they have along with color explanations. Then write down their stock number and search it on ebay, you'll find them a lot cheaper than msrp

The Silverstar bulbs are auto bulbs and not designed for vibration (unless they are installed on a Goldwing) anyway, the PIAA "Xtreme White" bulbs are motorcycle bulbs I have had the same driving light 55 watt bulbs on my 02 then my 05 now on my very vibrating 08 Ultra SE3, never replaced a single bulb !!  Have the PIAA 65 watt in both my high beam and low beam bulbs, had to modify the low beam by trimming one of the mounting tabs on the bulb housing until it fit in the housing.  And..no they don't effect the electrical system or run hot.

If I had the bucks I would get the LED's from HD.  Fit into stock enclosure they are so bright you can't look directly into them.  Saw a set in Slidell and I made the mistake of bending over to look at them from a few feet away,  it was blinding and I'm not kidding.  They probably have to be aligned very carefully to avoid blinding other drivers.

73273-11A is the part number for the 5.75 inch one ($400) and 73390-10A is the 7 inch one ($525), some models need a harness.

There are some Youtube videos comparing them with halogen.

Don't know what OTIS installed in Ol' Maudie, but I think they were HID.  I was shocked the first time I rode in the dark the other night.  It was soooo bright, I thought I was havin' a flashback!  Seriously.  ;) Later--HUBBARD
