Ultra Rear Shocks

What is everyone running on their 09 or newer SEUC?  I'm not thrilled with the air shocks that come with the bike.

Change the oil in them to 10w Amsoil Shock Therapy & you will think you just put totally different shocks on.  $10 fix

Don't have an '09 or newer, but have some experience that may be worthwhile.  Through long sweeping turns my '02 Ultra would hop sideways at high speed.  2-up it was almost violent, once.  Culprit; HD air shocks--JUNK!  Resolution; Progressive 440 HD's, 12".  I first installed the 11 1/2" version.  Looked good, but limited my speed through long turns at high speed.  The 12" Shocks allow me to lay the Ol' Girl in there right up to my ability to keep the shiny side up.  NO SIDEWAYS HOP!  Later--HUBBARD

How much oil ?? Or just measure what you drain..

HD spec say 12oz.  I always measure what I drain out, typically ~11oz as you can't get it all.  I have drained as little as 6oz, good HD quality control.  I always put 11.5 oz in the measuring cup knowing with that I will get 11oz into the shock.

You can't drain them, well probably could but it would take forever.  The best way is to pump it out & back in using the shock itself.

With the 10w Amsoil I run only 18 lbs of air 2 up under normal conditions.  Fully loaded on a trip, with the trailer I only run 25lbs.  This lets the shock actually work.

Now, this is only an inexpensive method, I am sure there are much better shocks out there but this works for me.  It took all the diving in the corners away, nice & controlled thru the corners now.

Here is a link with pictures of how to change the oil.

Hope this helps

What is everyone running on their 09 or newer SEUC?  I'm not thrilled with the air shocks that come with the bike.

A lot of options out there, depending on how much you want to spend.  Progressive 440's, Works, Bitubo (available through Traxxion Dynamics), Legend Air Ride, and Arnott's.  There are folks on here who are running all of those listed.  I have Legend Air Ride on my bike, but I need them for height adjustment 'cause I'm short.  I've run the Bitubo's also...one of the best shocks out there, IMO, once you get them set up properly.  If I didn't need the Legends for the height issue, I'd probably be running Bitubo's on my SERGU.

IMO, the stock HD air shocks are crap, just like the front fork suspension.  It's one of those things where you don't know what you're missing because you have nothing to compare it to.

Ernie,  You might want to talk to Jim at Metal Dragon.  He recommended the rear shocks from Suspension Technologies.  The first set they sent to me did not work out but the second set is terrific.

That is what I'm thinking but wanted to get some input.  I tried Progressive 440s on the 05 but took them off since I hated the ride and the clunking.  Put Bitubos on it and waz much better but had to space out the saddlebags to fit them.

Just installed Progressive 940's in rear w/ Monotubes in front. Much better ride w/ combo front & rear install.

Totally different than the POS air shocks from HD. IMO...

erniezap, I changed to the low profile HD air shocks at 2k miles. The fact that they were only 3/4 in shorter was barely noticeable. When I got up to about 13K miles I noticed one of them was leaking. Dealer would not cover under warranty since I installed them more than 60 days after bike purchase. Since I had my seat contured and I can put both feet flat on the ground easily I decided to put the original shocks back on which have been stored in the box since 2k miles. Here comes the good part. The installation took me about an hour, I reused the airline compression fittings with no problems, but as soon as I put  30 lbs of air in with the HD hand pump the right shock started leaking oil like crazy. It will be replaced under warranty when it arrives at dealer  next week.  Got off base a little, but I will keep using the stock suspension until 7 year warranty runs out (2015) they are not that great, but with passenger and luggage, air set at 45-50 lbs they do the job. I didn't like the stock shocks, especially 2 up with 50 psi.  Very harsh ride and they beat you up on a bumpy road.  I put the Suspension Technologies 13" shocks on a couple of days ago, have them adjusted to 4 turns currently, and I am loving them.  MAJOR difference in ride comfort!  That being said, I have only ridden solo so far, 2 up will be this weekend.

erniezap, let us know after you have ridden them for a while. It seems like only a few people on the site are completely satisfied with the way their CVO Ultras ride and handle. Mine is good enough to where I will keep it stock until warranty runs out. CAHDBIKER
