Concentration
« on: October 17, 2011, 08:54:00 AM »

Just a reminder- I almost lost my life yesterday morning, because I committed a "rookie" mistake.  We left the house for a little 250 mile jaunt to lunch, and just prior to entering a slight curve, I decided that it was necessary to adjust my RH mirror.  As I glanced back up at the road, I was over the center line, and meeting an oncoming pickup truck.  I swerved hard right, and missed being hit head-on by about one-half to one second.  No fault of the "other guy" at all- just me forgetting to focus on the task at hand.  No matter how many miles you have on your butt;  just one little moment of in-attention at the wrong time, can erase all of the postive experiences you've had over the years.
My wife saw the whole episode, and said the P/U driver had a look of horror on his face.  To you Sir; I apoligize for being stupid.  To her; Not gonna happen again..

Be careful out there......

Thanks for the reminder and your honesty.  And damn glad that you're still here and able to remind us instead of a post in the "Rider Down" board. :2vrolijk_21:

I've rode for more years than I can remember and I've had my share of close calls and I'd be lieing if I said that some of those bone head moves weren't my fault.

A snap back to reality.  I tell my wife all the time "it doesn't matter what else is going on in your life, when you're on that bike you have to stay constantly present.....in the here and now".  There are times when somebody needs to remind me of that, too.  I pray for God to ride with me! :2vrolijk_21:

FreestateSE3,  Great reminder.  Thank you.  Reminds me of the line from the TV series, NYPD Blue, "Let's be careful out there...."

WHEW! So glad you were able to recover and correct in time! Things happen so FAST out on the road... we are all right on the edge, no matter how safe we THINK we are riding.

Wow scary close call good to see you still here.

I almost had one of my own the other day. Riding hot on the twisties as ussuall but at the top of the hill in a hard down and left, was gravel. I was on the brakes as hard as I dared and made the turn with minimal wheel slide. All my fault  just to fast for the conditions and unforseen road hazards.

I think everyone of us experienced a time or two when we let our guard down and came out with a 'lucky day' mishap. Two years ago I had a stupid mishap that took one of my nine lives and i never felt so lucky.  My wife and I was riding north on 505 (separate bikes) at an 75 mph clip. (speed limit is 70 here) and we pass a large group of riders going the opposite direction. As usual we are trading the biker wave but someone in that group was doing a whirly hand motion that I found unusual. Stupid me turns my head over my left shoulder and the next thing I'm clipping along in the 'DIRT' shoulder at 75mph... I just held on tight and slowly eased myself back on the blacktop. I was ever so lucky there was no guardrail, drop off or some other obstruction that would have ended it all  :'(...that was the last time I ever looked over my shoulder... :-X

REAL riders admit mistakes.......others make excuses or seek to blame others. Great Save
