Subs in the Lowers - Any Thoughts? Come on you Audiophiles!!!
« on: October 17, 2011, 11:06:46 PM »

Has anyone tried these subs in their lowers? What do you guys think as far as fit (depth) and performance? They are JL Audio 6.5 inch, 4 ohm subs and I would drive them with (2) 75 watt Hawg Wired 4 ohm satellite amps. I would modify my lowers with CVO SG "speaker box" inserts to accept the 6.5 inch size. In my lowers now, I am currently driving (2) 5 1/4 inch 4 ohm Hawg Wired CX Series Speakers with the satellite amps as part of the Hawg Wired "Four in the Face" system.

I'm not a tech or audio professional; but, subs require an enclosure of specific dimensions to work well, and often use a port.  There are formulae for calculating the enclosure.

Suffice it to say, the glove box in the vented lowers will prove to be problematical as an enclosure for a sub.

Bottom line, you're likely to be able to find a sub that will fit, but it likely will not sound good.

Hopefully, someone far more knowledgeable than me will chime in.

For some info on enclosures, check-out basic car audio electronics' website:

Tom, you're welcome.  Rockford Fosgate also provides information on calculating enclosure dimensions for subs:

http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/rftech/box_advisor.asp

In the lower right hand corner of the above link, there are links for manually calculating enclosure volume, port use, etc.

If you go forward with this, keep us informed.  For me, the addition of subs in the vented lowers was a bit much to take on, though I hope someone else will do it and report on their results.

Also, your bike looks great--FLHTCUSE w/o the tour pak or OEM seat--great look and I'll bet it's a blast to ride.

Thanks Carl,

Subs might be a bit much for the lowers when considering the size and weight issue and the potential for some severe rattling. I still have some thinking to do on it! Thanks for the compliment on my bike, I love the (SG) look now and the black candy crimson/slate combo has always been one of my favorites. It is also a blast to ride now that it is a 107CI with over 100ft/lbs of torque from 2200rpm right on through 5100rpm and peaking at 110ft/lbs.

When installing your new speakers consider a sound deadening material such as DynoMat or FatMat. When I did my Hertz speaker conversion on my FLHX2 I used some leftover FatMat material from my 65 GTO. I believe this can make a huge difference when strategically placed, especially considering what these enclosures are made of. FWIW

Tom, your bike looks great--best CVO EG Ultra paint design yet, IMHO, of course, especially w/o the TP.

Thanks for posting.

I spoke with Rich (TIF2) the other day and he is working on subs for the lowers. Shoot him a PM or maybe he will see this thread and chime in.

You could port the bottom of the enclosure
but I bet the doors rattle then again if you like the
rattle cans in the trunk sound the kids have...

HD has ports for the tour pack that supposedly increase bass

Or you could mount one in the tour pack someone was making a kit
for  that with custom panel...

LOL @ "rattle cans in the trunk sound the kids have" Tell me that isn't one of the most annoying sounds that you've ever heard!
