Just finished installing my Legend Air Suspension
« on: October 21, 2011, 11:31:42 PM »

I just finished up installing my new Legend Air Suspension on my FLHXSE3!!  It took about 2 days, but only cause I made it more difficult than necessary.  After mocking everything up for routing, fit, and, functionality yesterday, I got everything installed and torqued down today.  I haven't had a chance to road test it yet, but I am really looking forward to testing it out tomorrow.

About my only complaint, so far, is that more air line could be included just in case of mistakes, which of course you know never happen.  ::)

Self fulfilling prophecy or jinx?  So I got about 1 mile down the road on the Legend Air Suspension's maiden ride and lost all air pressure!  :o  After riding home with the shocks bottomed out and practically throwing me out of the seat on every bump, I found that the air line had been melted through by the exhaust bracket.  ???   I thought I had routed the tubing with enough clearance from the exhuast, but I did not consider that the bracket would get hot enough to melt the tubing.  :-[  So I just ordered 40' of tubing from Legend, after running around Cheyenne and finding that no one carries this kind of tubing.

I will be careful to run the tubing INSIDE the frame rail, and far from any high heat areas..lesson learned!

I have Legends on my '07 and the tubing for them is nothing special.  Should be able to get it at any auto parts store.

No sir - I looked all over and it's not a standard size. I installed an AutoMeter Procomp air pressure guage in the dash and even had to get an adaptor to neck down to the tubing Legend uses.

I worked on a set two or three years ago.  It had eaten a line.  Got line for air shocks from the local parts store.

It worked then.  Doesn't mean it's the same thing that was packaged in your kit now of course.

Here is a link to a possible source of the fittings Legend uses
http://www.coastpneumatics.com/pdfs/smc/70AIFITTINGS.pdf

I ordered 40' of air line from Legend, I was only able to find 3' packaged lengths at local auto parts stores.

Could have changed, don't know.  I don't think it is 'standard' air line like would use with air shock on auto - that is what I got the first try.  But second time I took a portion of the tubing from Legend in and Auto Zone had that size.  :nixweiss:

The stuff that came with the guage was 1/8". I think the Legend might be 3/32"??  I dunno, but it was definitely smaller, as I had everything ripped apart before I relaized the delimma, and no local source of additional hose or adaptor fittings. I then had to slap the bike back together until I could sort everything out.

I have had mine since '07, had a line break on a trip due to wear, rode the last 400 miles with a hard tail.  My wife was not happy.  I checked around locally for some of the tubing and could not find the right size anywhere.  Ended up ordering some from Legends.

I had Legands do installs on a couple bikes this summer at their shop in Sturgis. I found them good to work with. Give them a call they will help you.  CHEERS   :drink:  :pumpkin:

(Yes, I am aware that this thread is really old, but it was the only one I could find that adressed the hoses used in the Legend system.)

I just had the same experience with my install. The line held it's pressure for about 75 miles, then blew. The Legend air hose looked as though it was pinched somewhere, so I'll chock that up to user (installer/me) error on my part.

I too searched around and couldn't find a suitable replacement. I then remembered that the hose used for the stock "adjustable" shocks on the FLHTCU uses a similar size hose. I stopped by Harley and picked up 10 feet of that hose and installed it. System worked great up until the tube got too hot and popped like a balloon. I heard it pop and then heard the hiss. That was while riding 70+ on the interstate. Tried to temp fix with duct tape which held for about a mile. Ended up limping back home with my new "rigid frame" MC.  :wall:

I'm now trying to get a 60' piece of the hose from Legend. I see carrying a spare with me as good insurance. It doesn't take up any room, and it's fairly easy to swap out with minimal tools.

As far as the comment on the diameter, I did find some tubing from Auto Meter which had the same outside diameter but a larger inner diameter (which didn't lock into the fittings). I'm pretty sure that the smallest inner diameter is used in this application to reduce the volume of air required to pressurize the system. I was thinking about using metal tubing, but the inner diameter would be large and that poor little compressor would have to pressurize that line and the shocks. I expect it would shorten the life of the compressor.

As a new cold wave rolled in yesterday, I hope to be back up when the next 40+ day arrives (Thursday). The riding season here is short enough and these kind of delays are frustrating. At least I've still got my Dyna to ride...

If anyone does know of another vendor that sells a suitable substitute for the hose from Legend, could you post a link?

I was worried about that when I installed mine so I left the stock hoses and taped the ends so I could hook them up and use my hand pump just in case.
