valve stem extension
« on: October 22, 2011, 02:32:40 PM »

Just wondered if anyone has seen or bought one of these valve stem extensions. I am going to get one. Usually if I fill my tires to the recommended P.S.I. they are good for two weeks(although If it is close to two weeks I do check them before a ride). However, on a SEUC it is a real pain to get the HD tire pressure gauge on the end of the valve stem on the rear wheel. If you don't get it right the first time ,say you are a little crooked air will leak out. Also this might help if you need to check your air at a gas station that has one of those long neck air chucks. See attached picture from HD catalogue.CAHDBIKER

I prefer this EZ air tire gauge shown below.  Instead of screwing on, it clips on.  It lets you fill and release air, plus it's cheaper and better than the HD version shown on that same catalog page.  Do a Google for EZ air tire gauge and filler to find the best price; they run about $20 each.

Be aware, that gauge is know for it's inaccuracy.  Even though it is expensive for a tire gauge they typically read anywhere between 2 & 6 lbs low.  That's enough to really cut the tire life (don't ask me how I know) Check it against a good digital gauge & you may be surprised what it reads.  I took a good digital guage & put the hose & filler on from this tire gauge, perfect combo.  Accurate & easy to us.

Just sayin.....

I use one. Valve stem access on the FLHTK is a PIA. This makes it easier, but there may be better ideas. How about a better design/location on the valve stem.

Skylag, not to knock Doublecoppers, but if what your saying is true then he should go to a Dealer and test his guage against the ones they use when they install a new tire. I have two air pressure gauges, the HD one and one I bought from Groits garage. They are within 1lb of each other.I also checked my HD gauge against the one my tech at the HD dealer uses. They are also within 1 lb of each other. I keep the Slime Brand air pumps in both of my bikes with a plug kit for 09 and slim for 95 Heritage to get me to where I can get a new tire. I just made the post because I was wondering if anyone had the HD valve extension. I plan on getting one only because If I want to add air at a gas station sometimes they have the air chuck with the long nipple on the end and I know that there is no way that it will fit the air valve on the rear tire of my 09SEUC. I mean just trying to get the HD gauge, or a regular air chuck on there is a PITA. A couple of companies make angled valve stems, but I am pretty sure if you installed one of them then you would be fighting the rear brake disc to put air in. I appreciate all the input. Thanks CAHDBIKER

I use this gauge. It reads as close to my eyes will allow it to exactly what either of my 2 digital gauges read.
Wised it went up to 1250 so I could use it on my trailer.
And the clip is well made, junk gauges like this have clips that are more trouble then they are worth.

I took my analog guage with me to the INDY tire shop & found it read almost 45 lbs when the shops digital guages read 40 lbs.  They have 4 guages & always compare at least 2 of them on every tire.  So with my guage reading 40 lbs I actually had 35 lbs in the tire.

I compared the HD digital guage & one from an auto parts.  The Auto parts guage is withing 1/2 lb of the tire shop.  The HD guage is right at 1lb low.  I also run a tire pressure monitor system on the 09.  It also reads close to 1lb low.  So I keep the HD guage in the 09 & always set the tires to 41 lbs.  That way I know I am at 40.  In the 06 I keep the auto parts guage and set the tires at 40 lb.

Attached is a picture of the HD guage with the other hose on it.

Want to fuss over a psi or two, you need to pony up for a good gauge.

http://powertank.com/products/sfID1/14

Powertank will make up the skit you want, say a "digital gauge, infiltrator with a 2' hose and right angle clip on".

Thanks for the heads-up.  I checked my EZ against two other gauges plus the gauge on my compressor, and it's within 1-2 psi of them.

Great idea for that Franken-gauge.

Bought 2 EZ ( to get free ship) from Amazon for 13.95 ea. Both checked within 1 lb of a certified digital. Just for info, get what you want.
