smallest caliber you can trust
« on: October 25, 2011, 10:56:39 AM »

On Bud's Forums the question came up: what is the smallest caliber you trust
to protect yourself...

My personal favorite bear defense gun has always been a Beretta Jetfire in
.22 short! I've found over the years when hiking in bear country I never
leave without it in my pocket. Of course we all know the first rule when
hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System". For those of you who
may be unfamiliar with this it means you NEVER hike alone, you bring a
friend or companion, even an in-law, that way if something happens there is
someone to go get help. I remember one time hiking with my buddy in northern Ontario. Out of nowhere came this huge brown bear and man was she MAD! We must have been near one of her cubs. Any way if I had not had my little jetfire I'd sure not be here today.
That's right, one shot to my friends knee cap and I was able to escape
by just walking at a brisk pace. That's one of the best pistols in my safe!

I don't have to out run the bear.  I just have to out run you!   :coolblue:

with proper shot placement, just about anything can be taken down with a 22.

I don't think the odds are with you out running a bear, I have seen them run. And had one walk out in front of me about 20 feet and just in front of him popped out three does he was following. He stopped in front of me and sniffed towards me showed me his teeth. I carried a hand gun hunting with me ever since. Even with a rifle in your hands a close encounter is still scary. :'(

I don't care how well placed the shot is, you ain't taking down a charging Grizzly bear with a 22.  A shot in the head or heart might kill it eventually, but not before he ate part of you for lunch.

And you sure can't outrun one...

Shooting your companion is a pretty good idea though.... :huepfenlol2:

When I was bowhunting the Torngat Mt range which belongs to the Inuits they routinly take down Polar Bear with a 22 rifle.  When we asked the head guy he simply said because it is all we have, one shot in the ear and they are done.  Of course they are on snowmobiles when they take the shot.

5,6 x 61 Super Express vom Hofe is a .22 cal. but used to be very popular with european professional hunting guides for the long range shot at big game. It will kill even a grizzly if well placed - but it will not stop an attac ...

Yea, but the problem is placing the shot with 800lbs of brown fur and teeth coming at you from 100 feet away.  Maybe I could turn it away with the smell in my pants...

And that shot has to be be between the eyes no?

For many years of diving the the same joke was used with different dive tools.

"why do you carry that big dive knife?"
"Sharks"
"Do you really think you can fend off a shark in his environment with a foot long knife?"
"No, just stab my buddy and let him fend off"

Newbie divers during the classroom sessions just never got the concept, always the puzzled looks.
