Dave...no, not on the new bike...yet.  I might let them replace 1 set on this bike, if they go bad, just because I have nothing "in there" that I care too much about them messing with.  If the second set quits, I'll do the Heat Demons on my dime and get it over with.

I had messed around with the bars, wiring, etc. on my '06, so only I knew exactly what could be messed up by some richard head mechanic.

I always referred to them as Richard craniums!!!!!........................Fuzz

I don't do much of my on repairs, so how much trouble is it to install the Heat Demons?  Do you have to pull the factory wires out of the handlebars or can the existing wiring be used to install the Heat Demons?

Hadn't seen that product before.  Assuming the reliability isn't a question certainly looks like a simple install.  And it's hard to argue with the $29 price tag at the link below.

http://www.aerostich.com/heated-grip-kit.html

The Heat Demon kits do cost more.  They're likely a bit more trouble to install also.  But damn that little switch of theirs looks so much better...
Will those (Aerostich) work on Harleys?  I thought their stuff was for Beemers!  :D :D :D

It's a universal fit.  Just a heating pad that could wrapped on/around anything and a toggle switch.

I hear you ont he Beemer stuff.  ;D

I can vouch though that they work on Harleys too. I have had them on three bikes now and the only failure I had was when I traded bars on my Road King and tried to reuse a set. I broke one of the elements trying to get it out of the inside of the bar. Totally my fault.

As for the switch, yes it is a POS. When I do my bar change this winter, I intend to go with a HD accessory rocker. I think they make a three position rocker that will work fine.

You have to pull out the old wiring, but that's easy.  A fish tape is provided with the Heat Demons to pull the new wires into the bars.  There's a thread or two on here about it if you search "Heat Demons".

Why don't you all move to FL? I have had my '11 SERG since February and only had the heater grips turned on twice...When I was away in Sturgis and in Tenn. on the Blue Ridge!

86 in Tampa today, 75 right now, damn, I might need to heated grips tonight!!!  :D

Greatly appreciated all of the posts, mine died after about 8 month of ownership (bike is a 06 Ultra).  Thought I would get em repaired this year.  I really did not want to go back to Harley

Same in California, he, heee...rode into work this morning in lower 50s weather, summer gloves and heated grips at 4.  Normally, I just kick up to the heavier gloves, but thought I'd see how these do, given we've had so few real cold days since March.

Since I plan to ride all winter as well, these heated grips will get a nice workout along with the Gerbings vest.

Sorry to hear of the failures, but I agree with RedDevil on the not overreaching one's conclusions without empirical data from which to draw.  Maybe someone could post a poll to draw from our membership and perhaps on the Harley sites too.  It just might yield some interesting results.

Most of all, at least I am forewarned about this potential problem with the heated grips.  Thank you!

One thing to consider is you'll only hear on this site from the people that have actually had problems with the grips (just like the 110 engine), so it may seem like a disproportionate amount of the grips have failed.  I haven't counted up how many on here have, but like the 110's it's probably less than 1% of the total produced since 2006.  I think that's probably well within industry norm.  I know this doesn't placate those that have had the grips fail, but I think to label something a piece of crap because of the small amount is not justified.  It may be to those that have had them fail.  I personally have never had a set fail yet, and I'm on my second CVO that's come with them, my first being an 07.   Having a second set, on the same bike, fail, would lead to great frustration for me, but would start leading me to believe that maybe, there's an outside influencer here.  Have a third, or fourth set fail on the same bike, I would definitely say that something other than the grips are causing them to go bad.  If they're under warranty, I'd say get them replaced.  Dealer messes up, the onus is on them.  If you replace with something else, whether they're better or not, and you mess up, now it's on you.  If you're experienced in doing stuff like this then bottom line, it's your call.  I'm just saying that don't let all that you've read in this board about the failed heated grips influence you without understanding it's not as great of an issue in the grander scheme of things, as it appears here.  Also, if I'm not mistaken, most of the hand grip problems reported here happened on the 06-08 model years.

I guess I'm a 1%er with set #4 and they work marginally at best.

On my sec. set,  went to one dealer when the grips were just getting warm you could only fill them with bare hands.
they said they were working just fine. Went form having plenty of heat when new at the number two setting to the highest setting being just warm.

A week later i went too a different dealer and they repaced them, they are working great for now. :)

Not sure why a dealer would not take care of  a CVO customer,  They may think I spent all my money on the buying the bike and none left for repairs.. :nixweiss:  Latus over in Clackamass Oregon >:(  You need to take care of the CVO's put them to front of the line :) :) and have parking spot just for the CVO's  All dealers should do this., :D ;D

I do know the Dealer that got me in and out will get my money when warranty is up.

I had them put heated grips om my 08 Ultra and they crapped out in less than a year. Dealer replaced them under warranty and they were working when I sold it to buy the 10 CVO. Ones on the CVO worked great when new but like others they are barely warm now. Dealer's going to change them under warranty when I take the bike in for the brake switch recall.

I think you'd have a better success rate (and have both sides of your hands and wrists warm) with the Gerbing heated gloves. :2vrolijk_21:

I have over 100K miles on HD heated grips.
1st bike- '07 (added accessory when new) - got HOT, Loved 'em.  Replaced once in 13K miles.
2nd bike '08 (added accessory when new) - got HOT, Loved 'em.  Replaced 3 times in 48K miles.  They were actually coming apart inside.
3rd bike '10 (CVO, came stock) - only get warm, wish they got hotter.  Replaced 4 times in 48K miles.  Only the left grip has been replaced.  Service manager says the controller dies.

They would have been replaced more frequently, but I don't worry if they don't work in the summer  ;)
