Grind off your mushrooms!
« on: October 28, 2011, 11:06:33 AM »

A friend ended up in the hospital after using a punch to remove a pin....and had a piece of mushroon come off and bounce AROUND his safety glasses....and bury itself in his eye....luckily, his eye should be OK.

So....go through your tool boxes, work benches and shops and clean up those mushroomed ends!

Yeah - mushrooms. Many moons ago I was taking off a ring gear from a Spicer 60. Hit the punch, the piece chipped off and hit me square in the bottom lip. Split wide open and bled so bad I had to stop working for the day.

Took all the punches/chisels to the grinder after that and never had another mushroom tool.

Eventually a dental X-ray revealed a filling that I didn't have  :nixweiss: Turns out that I still have the metal chip in my lip. Brakleen and 90 weight never caused a problem  :drink:

What kind of safety glasses allowed something around the protection?

Safety glasses come in many sizes shapes and forms and are not fail proof if not worn properly. Just as we should not use mushroomed tools we should always use the right tool for the job or risk incident. Thank goodness he is alright and has no permanent damage.

I've broken just about every shop safety rule until I saw a friend lose his eye to a cutoff wheel shattering. I always use my safety glasses now.

The hammer end of a chisel or punch when it has been hit too many times with out some dressing up at a grinder.
Both the chisel and punch in this picture are starting to get a "mushroom". The metal is fatigued and brittle. Subsequent hammering will continue to mushroom over and then start chipping off. The chips can hurt!

You dont hear of these mishaps very often, in fact its the second time in my lifetime i've heard of eye injury from mushroomed chisel tools.  in the early 50's my grandfather lost his left eye banging on old mushroomed punch to free up a PTO on his tractor. My dad, being a machinist, then started the habit keeping his punch tools mushroom free with his bench grinder and passed the trick onto me.. I dont use my punch tools enough to form mushrooms but im well aware of the safety factor to keep the blunt on punch/chisels tools clean..  This is a good reminder how dangerous mushroomed chisel/punch tools can be.. Thanks for bringing this up   :2vrolijk_21:

And just because you keep the ends cleaned up doesn't negate the use of safety glasses. I have done a complete turn around from my younger days of not wearing PPE - personal protective equipment.

Although I have recovered from the various cuts and bruises, burns from welding and bumps - my hearing is not up to par from all the years of using impact guns. Nothing like doing frame work inside fenders with 1/2 and 3/4 inch guns to give you permanent - non reversible tinnitus.

Been there myself, when I see the guys on the various bike builds or any of the handyman shows welding with no gloves or welding shields or grinding with no eye or face protection it makes me cringe. But I have seen first hand what happens with not properly maintaining hand tools. It was always harped upon in our daily safety meetings at work.  :nervous:...
