Bar suggestions for FLHXSE3
« on: October 29, 2011, 01:28:47 AM »

I've been getting some numbness and discomfort in my right hand while riding my new FLHXSE3, and have noticed it is hard to keep my wrists in neutral position (flat) while riding, which leads to constriction of blood flow to the hands.  I am 5'8", with a short inseam and longer in the torso.  I have seen a lot of talk about the Wild One 575's, but would like to have additional info before I pull the trigger and order some aftermarket bars.  Also I am thinking a mini ape would look good, in WY the height of the bars cannot be above your shoulders.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The stock bars SUCK. I run the Wild 1 Chubbys 575s... they are great. They are about 1" higher and 2" wider, and have 2" more pullback than the stock bars, and have a different angle for the grips. I really like them. I am 5'9", and I had to reach uncomfortably far with the stock bars, but with the 575s the grips are right where I need for them to be. The Chubbys complement the bike beautifully too, because they are 1 1/4" instead of 1", and are "mandrel-bent" - meaning that they are bent with a housing around them so that there are no ugly depressions in the bends from the bending jig. The chrome is superb as well. Best-looking bars I've ever had - very smooth, shiny, and CHUBBY!

I have a thread in the SG forum about the 575s I installed on my bike...

I have the Paul Yaffe Monkey bagger bars. Mine are 12 inch. They may be too tall for your state though. The 10 inch version would probably work good. Most people do not have to change any lines or wiring with the 10 inch.
I love mine. I had the same problem and the new bars fixed that.  I just wanted a different look than the wild 1 bars.  I have a friend that has them, another friend has Burley bagger bars and they look good.
 Good luck in your search.

Do you know what length clutch/brake cables you had to go to?

Hey,
If I remember correctly, both lines were 70 inches. I got them from a guy on the forum, his name on here is hd-dude. He has a shop called Metal Dragon. Here is his phone number, 510-885-9471. His name is Jim, give him a call and tell him what you are installing and he will fix you up. Good luck.

Besides the bars, you might want to consider Kuryakn Iso Grips.....  http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/31/Premium-ISO-Grips

It's amazing how well they work! :2vrolijk_21:

I'm considering trying a set of AVON air cushion grips:

Numb in the right hand comes from wrestling the throttle torsion. You can find grips with a palm heel tab which reduces the need to grab the grip to control the throttle.

I wrapped my stock grips with cork-cushioned bicycle racing handlebar tape. This stuff comes in colors and textures. A good wrap can include palm swells and custom contours under the tape. Secure the tag end of the wrap w/ colored electrical tape. (I used stock black friction tape because it matches the Denim Black paint.)

The wrap provides some cushion, a larger diameter grip. A good wrap makes finger grooves, like the tape wrap on a baseball bat. $12.99 for a kit at the local bike shop. More than enough to do four grips.

I'm prone to carpal tunnel on the wrists (because I'm a computer geek). And so I use the Cruise Control at every opportunity to reduce the grip and torsion in the hands/wrists. A back-rest helps too -- if you're not holding yourself in position and getting back support, you can reduce the grip on the throttle.

The Kuryakn grip that I posted a link to (above) has the throttle rocker tab that you mention, is a much fatter grip that has the finger groves.  It does the trick....I was surprised by it. :2vrolijk_21:

I put on a the Klockwerks Ergo bars on my 2010 and they're fantastic!  You may want to take a look at those as well.
