New iPhone 4S? Anyone Using This Yet & Other Questions???
« on: November 06, 2011, 11:20:52 AM »

I'm usually an early adopter, but I did not go for the first iPhone, but did do the iPhone 3G.  I've used this for 3 years and it just got SOOOOOO slow that I had to do something.

Also, I have several iPods with a few more higher end docks and wireless players etc for the iPods.  That also includes a few car items for playing into my AUX input in my Titan.  All of these items charged all of my iPods while they were docked and playing.  When I bought the iPhone 3G with the VERY SAME flat pin connector on the bottom I thought I was in seventh heaven.  UNTIL I found out that the idiots at Apple changed the charging pins in the flat pin connector and NONE of my iPod items would charge my iPhone 3G while playing or just plain docked.

I finally got over my being pissed at Apple and just moved on with more iPod stuff and not worrying about using my iPhone for much other than an occasional song or two.

I just bought the new iPhone 4S and low and behold the phone is now able to be charged on all my old iPod systems and it doesn't have the "Not Recommended" disclaimer coming up every time it's plugged into a system.

I have the iPod interface module on my '09 SERG and I used the iPhone 4S as my iPod last weekend and it did everything my mini Ipod 16G Nano does, except my iPhone 4S is a 64G unit and easily hold more than 10k songs.

So, when did they allow charging with the old iPod stuff, with the iPhone 4 or just since the new iPhone 4S?

I've been playing with the new iPhone 4S and it's lightening fast.  I has the same A5 Dual Core processor that the iPad 2 uses.  Whether your network is 4G or like my AT&T network at 3G, the new processor and internal goodies gives the same upload / download speeds as all of the other 4G networks.  I think 14.4 down and something like 5.2 up.  So on AT&T 3G I have the same speeds as the other networks and phone that are on 4G networks.  So far I'm very happy with the performance and the new 8mp camera and 1080P HD video is the bomb.  The volume seems to be a bit louder too; maybe new larger speaker in the base, not sure though.

Does anyone else here have the new iPhone 4S and are you using it with any of your iPod docks, players or even like me, on your Harley with the iPod interface module?

Although I just heard that there is an issue with battery draining on the new iPhone 4S and a new software update is coming out, I do not have any issues with battery usage and my old iPhone 3G is still very useful around the house or anywhere you can log on with WiFi.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks.

I have the iPhone 4. I am at this moment DLing the ios5 update to get the iCloud/Wireless sync option. I wanted to get the 4s but I don't have any upgrades until mid 2012 and do not feel like shelling out over $800 for a 64GB version. I have really enjoyed my iPhone since switching over from the Droid platform. I have an iMac, Macbook Pro, Ipod and Ipad 1 so it makes keeping everything synced up a whole lot simpler. I really want to have Siri. Maybe I can get it on my 4 once I update. Any idea?

Hi Rob, I love that you have a new bike toy on it's way.  I read the thread and loved the comments etc.  A customer of mine has a 1300 Beemer like the one you're getting, but just smaller and an older model by a couple years.  He said that I could come over and just take for a day and ride where ever I want to see what it's like.  I may take him up on it next summer.  Right now I'm not in the market for anything new.  Good luck with your new toy.

Back to the iPhones.  I've played with Siri some and it does work better each time I try it out.  But so far it's only been asking about this or that person and going to the web for me.  I've not done any of the calendar changing like the Apple videos show, but the possibilities are vast.

I was way over due for my phone upgrade with AT&T.  I think it was $399 for the 64G with renewal upgrade.  But you're right, outright they are very expensive.  I had my wife pick mine up for me the Friday they were released.  Here in St. Louis there wasn't any problem getting a 64G phone mid day.  I'm sure some of the smaller Gig phones sold out faster.  My wife, being who she is, got me the warranty plan with both Apple and AT&T.  With Apple I can get my phone replaced, if damaged by me, twice during the two years for just $50 each time.  If I lose my

I'm not sure about iCloud and if that's going to work out for me.  I can't see that much advantage to getting it setup.  I do take a lot of pictures with the new 8mp camera and a few HD videos so far, but I can't see how iCloud would help me there.

Good luck with your 4 and iOS5 software.

I will say that this new 4S is amazingly fast compared to my old 3G.  I do like the changes in the charge capabilities with my iPod devices etc.  Does you 4 have the ability to charge from the iPod docks or does it still say "Not Recommended" like my 3G does when I use it with the docks?

I still have the belt and 30t pulley in the boxes.  I've not done the change over yet and contemplating if I will after hearing all the crap about broken belts.

Keep us posted on the new wheels...

No Siri except on the new 4S. It's Apple's way of driving upgrades. Maybe they will make it available on the iPhone 4 someday - but I highly doubt it... probably requires too much CPU power and needs the dual-core A4 processor.

I have been running iOS 5 on all of my Apple iOS devices (an iPhone 4, an iPad, and an iPad 2) since it became available. I also have two MacBook Pros that I love. I do IT dev for a living, and the new MBP 17" quad-core I that I ordered on Feb 24 - the day it was announced - is blindly fast. SQL statements run on my MBP in about 25% of the time they take to run on my client's servers! Kind of funny. Apple makes REALLY GOOD STUFF... my aluminum unibody MBP makes all other plastic-case laptops seem like a Yugo. And I love the big lighted Apple logo on the back of the lid, too.

On the iPhone 4 that I have, you get all iOS 5 functionality except Siri. The iCloud synching across devices is really very cool. I migrated my Mobile Me account to iCloud a couple of weeks ago, and I'm sure not looking back.  I hardly ever need to even sync my devices via iTunes anymore - except for iOS updates.

I have talked to several 4S owners, and they all LOVE Siri. I just got my iPhone 4 earlier this year, so I will not be eligible for an upgrade for awhile though... bummer. I have also been told that the 4S is truly lightning fast with the new dual-core processor - but my iPhone 4 is pretty darn fast... and I hope it will stay that way for awhile. I finally HAD to upgrade to the iPhone 4  because my old iPhone 3G had slowed to a virtual crawl and was basically unusable with iOS 4. Older devices getting slower and slower on newer OS releases seems to be part of the Apple-verse...

Dan, I got my 4S a couple weeks ago.  And I thought it would connect to the my '11 CVO RG Ultra just like the iPod that came with the bike.  Bit while the plug would fit it is very loose and not secure.  I got no response from the radio.  So are you saying the your 4S plugs into the iPod connection on your bike and works fine?  If so wonder why mine will not.  :nixweiss:

Rob,
If you jail break the phone , perhaps you will get Siri, but the Siri the jailbroken phones get DO NOT GET RESPONSE FROM APPLE SERVER. So basically is useless.
I bought the 4S since I was eligible for an upgrade and really enjoy the Siri  UI , particularly when you curse and she said "david watch your language" or " i did not deserve that". In general is really good in scheduling reminders calendars alarms and doing mathematical calculation, currency exchange etc. Of course weather and directions . This interfase will go as far as Apple wants to take it.

Ultrafxr,

I have the interface cable run to my right hand SERG fairing glove box.  Usually I just have the 16G Nano hanging on the end as it weighs nothing at all.  When I tried, and used, my new 4S, it locked in tightly and I didn't think anything about it being loose or the like.

I got all my playlists just as my Nano would do, although as I remember I had to turn on the wake up the 4S and then go to my music app to get it started.  Once in my music app, it was just like with my Nano.

I would not believe that they would have a different flat ribbon/pin connector for the 4S than al the other hardware they have now.  What I was happy with was the charging ability on the 4S.  I'm not sure if I skipped a generation or two by not having a 3GS or a 4 to try in my docks etc.

The other comments on the Sir etc.  I think I will get more comfortable with them, but iCloud I just don't really understand yet.  My old 3G sync'd with my work Microsoft Exchange account on a daily basis and I've never had to do anything to get the new updates from work in my calendar, so I'm not sure what I will gain with iCloud.

Thanks to all for the comments and information.

Some simple insights on iCloud would be appreciated if anyone has a good explanation on what it will do etc.

Thanks again…

Those of us with the 4G and no update for a few months...here's an app I downloaded that has very similar functionality to Siri.

The app is called "vingo" and is a free app.  Do a search on your App Store and check it out.  I've only used it a couple of times, but very good so far.  Doesn't talk back to you....is that so bad????

Subscribed to this thread. I've purchased iPods and an iTouch but no cellphone except an old motorazr set up for pre pay monthly. No need just yet for Iraq but will look at iPhones and Droids the closer I get. I'm due for a new laptop and it looks like I'll be staying on here longer so let the shopping begin. I've been eyeballing a Sager 8180 with a 18.4" display but I should visit Apple and see what they have to offer as well. Thanks for posting different options.

We had been waiting for the promised 5 to come out. Our contract had expired back in April and we both so wanted to get an iphone. Not that the smart phones we've been using were not great, they were, but maybe more than Jamey, I really wanted the iphone. When the 4S was released, and talk of 5 being so far away, we finally caved and got the 4S.
I'm not sorry I did not wait, am happy I waited for the 4S
Siris is most assuredly a great friend of mine.
I am using this tool more than you can believe. well more than I can believe.
I am in love with the 4S.

I am due for an upgrade and was considering the 4S, but was thinking about waiting for the 5.  What have you heard or read about the difference's between the two phones?  I can find very little info regarding the 5 so I'm not sure I will wait for it to be released.

Just upgraded to the 4S - it is somewhere between Indiana and home at the moment, cant wait to dump my droid.

Some tidbits-thoughts, there is a software upgrade for battery related issues. Time zone checking is supposedly one of the drains. With the setting set to check for correct time zone the phone is accessing the cell network way to frequently and killing the battery. Kind of like my nextel use to due when there was no service.

the icloud has it's own issues, one is you may easily exceed your data plan if you have multiple devices sync'ed.
Cnet did a story today on it using the example of 4 devices on the same iTunes account. You download a few songs every day, maybe 20MB total. All four devices will then sync/download. Now you are at 80MB.  Do that for 20 days out of your billing period and you are near the 2GB limit.

Fortunately for me I am still grandfathered with my unlimited plan.
