Voltage on Heated Grips???
« on: June 25, 2006, 10:09:25 AM »

If some of ya'll could check for me I'd appreciate it....What I'm wondering is if anybody else has Voltage on their heated grips.....if I check between the clutch side grip and the clutch lever itself I have full battery voltage on there.....doesn't bother me normally....but I got caught in a horrendous downpour yesterday and my leather gloves were drenched......grabbing the clutch or brake lever (ya it's on the throttle side also) was.......shocking.....to say the least.  It's going to the dealer for replacement no doubt....but I was wondering if others are having the problem and don't know it.  I complained about voltage on the heated grips when I went in for the first service and they said they couldn't find anything....wasn't really bothering me so I thought nothing of it after that......until yesterday.

We came through a frog strangler on Thursday and I didn't notice any current, but I was wearing rubber gloves.  Though there was enough water that if any voltage was present I may have felt it anyway.  Many cars were pulling off the road, it was raining so hard.  Of course that gave me and the mrs more room to ride!!! ;D

Yeah was raining hard on us too....only problem for me was glasses fogging up so I couldn't see....then I remember the old Scuba trick of using some spit and that took care of it...finished the ride home in a hard downpour.

A voltmeter from the grip to the lever would tell if it's there or not.

Question: Were the grips on or off when voltage is present? I thought this was a stupid question but, I think it matters.

No voltage on mine (whether heat on or off to the grips).  My only complaint (so far anyway) is that the grips do not get hot enough.  If temp is 45 - 50 degrees then OK.  But when riding in temps near freezing (mine anyway) just did not offer that much.  JMNTBHO

Train, I have not played much with the heated hand grips (well, not at all, actually), but I just can't imagine that there should be a voltage drop from the hand grips to ground (the lever or anything else that is grounded).  Normally 12 volts wouldn't mean anything, but wet it sure could.

Harley should be falling all over itself to correct this one, because I'd think it's a substantial liability issue (like recall time, maybe?).

Maybe they should run the ignition output through the heated handgrips as well so you could enjoy the experience in the dry?

They were off (according to the little knob thingy on the end).....no difference if I turn em on either....and they still heat up.

Well I mentioned it to them on the first service also but never put a voltmeter to it myself...had a cut on my finger and when I'd grab the clutch lever with it I'd feel a transient voltage...not enough to hurt.  They checked it and couldn't find anything so I left it at that.....til the other day.....was shockin the crap outta me with them wet gloves on.....I'm gonna pull the fuse and take it in when I get a chance....it's riding time now and not cold enough to need the heat.......as long as it's in before the 2yr warranty is up I shouldn't have an issue.

FR8TRN,
Just remembered to check mine.  I've got essentially no voltage between the grip and the clutch lever no matter what setting it's on.  Sometimes I could get about 45mV showing, but that could be bleed over from myself to the circuit.  I'd say you've got a short right there in the grip.  Funny you don't feel it when you come to a stop- front brake and clutch held.  Something's wrong.  That is unless you LIKE that kind of thing!!!! mine would slightly shock me every time I grabbed the clutch lever or front brake. It didn't matter if they were on or off. They heated fine when I turned them on. I took the fuse out since it is warm now and no more shock.

Yeah my fuse is pulled now also....no sense in going to the dealer right now....it just quit flooding around here...it's time to ride again.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
