Rokkers....... coming! 4-ways
« on: November 08, 2011, 03:14:58 PM »

Well, I must be going deaf.  Just can't really hear my radio at 80mph any more.

So, I broke down and ordered the J&M Rokkers for the fairing and the rear pods.  Hope this does the trick......?

Yes, even with just the stock amp, you'll notice a nice improvement.

I upgraded from the Black 7.25's and matching rears to the Rokkers when I added the amp and the lower Rokkers. My buddy stuck the old black set in his stock Ultra classic with the stock 80w amp and it made a dramatic improvement. While I think with the stock HO amp on the CVO's, the Black series is more than enough, it doesn't hurt to go with the Rokkers if you plan on adding an amp down the road.

Well..... maybe I am hard of hearing...

I don't know, but I am not impressed with the quality or quantity of sound.  Yes, yes I know I am on an open motorcycle moving through the wind at 80mph, but for the cost of this upgrade, I can really not notice much difference.

If I really look hard, I see an improvement in the Rokker rears over the factory units.  If I look really hard at the fronts, they seem to be under driven with no improvement in low end or even the high end sound. All wiring is keyed/sized so almost impossible to hook up wrong.  The foam in the fairing made for a really tight fit on reassembly.  I seem to be in limbo.....

Actually, several months ago, I bought the headsets(2) from the same manufacturer and did not see a marked difference from the stock HD headsets. I could not recommend this option.

Well, I hate to dump another 300+ on an amp if I don't notice it anywhere beside my wallet....

Any input, advice?

Return them.

The problem with audio, it's terribly subjective, and what's a big improvement to one is a quite different thing to someone else.  I run with a number of guys with Ultras, and Stock vs the Black 7.25"s do make a very noticeable improvement, and then, upgrading to the 250w amp made another nice improvement. All three bikes can be set side by side, so the difference is very apparent.

I would however encourage you to double-check the wiring and make sure you got everything installed correctly, as no improvement at all doesn't sound right. Then use a CD for reference tests. Do not rely on FM or an Ipod/MP3 that is of reduced quality.

The good news is, I do believe J&M has some sort of a satisfaction guaranty, so I'd call them, and send everything back if you don't like it. Chalk up the return shipping the price of admission to test them.  After confirming their policy, I would however give it a couple of days to see if you just walked in with unreasonable expectations. Do keep in mind that even the best motorcycle system outdoors, especially at 80 mph, will never sound anywhere near as good as a cheap system in your living room.  That's just the nature of the beast.

I've only got the 250w amp, and I'm very happy. You can always want more, and I'm under no illusions that J&M is the absolute best out there, but I do think of the various system designed as a plug-in kits for our bikes, it's near the top of the packaged kits group.  Certainly custom installs are in a whole 'nother league, that can cost thousands, but that's beyond my means.

The point is, I can't fathom he's reporting zero improvement. Must be something wrong somewhere.

Hey Mgloo and Fat...

Thanks for the input.

Again, I know I am on a motorcycle, open to the world, with at least a 65mph wind..... I know that.  And, I know that my expectations were much higher........

I did note that I can hear an improvement in the rear... and after a couple of rides... I can verify that there is an improvement.

I just can't hear a marked improvement in the fronts.  I still have to have volume at 75% to discern voice and at that amp level, sounds like a bunch of distortion.

This weekend, I will review the install and wire connections.

I do appreciate the input.

Thanks, Gearheadfmc

Ultimately, if you still are not happy, I highly suggest you make arrangements to return the product.

Hawg-Wired, and Hog-Tunes both offer speaker upgrades that might be worth testing as well.

From there, there are countless custom options out there.

Good luck.
