Can Of Worms
« on: November 09, 2011, 11:48:50 AM »

I have a 2011 FLTRUSE. The heated hand grips went out. Took it to a dealer to replace and apparently they had to remove the ignition switch to do it. They fixed the heated hand grip but they said the ignition switch was defective. They got that in and replaced it but they had to hook up to the ECM. I have a Thunder Max w/Auto tune on the bike. The dealer said my Warranty is gone due to the TMax ECM. The dealer said I will not have locking baggers and that the alarm system will not work. They also said the switched out ECM was probably the cause of the heated grips to go out. My original ignition key still works to manually or remotely lock the bike and the alarm works fine. Now since all this has happened the the heated seat went out. Took the bike to a different dealer they replaced the seat no problem. I also have the 5 year extended service contract on the bike. Would I be able to get my money out of that if I can even cancel it?
Thanks

Each dealer has their own ideas about added non-harley parts. You did the right thing by going to a different dealer, also keep the extend warranty.

You were going to the wrong dealership.  Sounds like you found the right one. :2vrolijk_21:

A couple of things bother me here:
Did they say how the Tmax ECM caused the heated grips to go bad? Sounds suspicious
You went in with a working ignition switch and when they were working on the bike it suddenly became defective? Sounds like they broke it during Removal/installation
Why did they have to hook up to the ECM after installation since the Fob and/or TSSM were not replaced. (or am I missing something on the newer bikes here?)

Agree with the others. Stay with the new dealer and keep the extended warranty

Isn't that convenient, switch has been working just fine all this time and they only noticed that it was defective after they removed it. Not to mention the symptoms that weren't there until after they worked on it.  Man, I wish I could fabricate excuses like that in my business and get my customers to believe them!

The reason they had to hook up to the ECM is that when they replaced the ignition switch I got two new key fobs. That is when they hooked up to the ECM. Of course the TMax was not recognized by the HD computer. That is when they said that that killed my warranty. They also put on the paperwork that I was running the TMax. As this would flag the motor company that I had a Non Stock ECM. But I did get my seat replaced under Warranty. So the Motor Company has not caught up with me yet.

I assume you didn't throw the original ECM in the trash, so if you run into something in the future that requires a dealer to connect to the ECM I'd suggest you remove the T-Max and reinstall the original ECM.  Problem solved.

Obviously since the locks and fobs and all that good stuff were working with the T-Max installed, before the dealer screwed them up, you don't need the stock ECM for them to work.  So this was strictly a case of a jackass in a Harley store (my, what a rare thing that is (not)) deciding to screw with you.  The smart way to deal with that is to find a good dealership, do not spend another nickel in the crappy one, and give that original dealership all the free negative advertising he can stand.  As long as folks tolerate being screwed and jerked around by these clowns, nothing will change.

I wish I had thought of that before. But at the time I didn't realize they were going to hook up to the ECM. Now I'm going to carry my stock ECM with me. So if I have trouble again I'll throw in the stock ECM. But since the dealer notified the Motor Company it may be all for not.

I had my ignition switch replaced retained the original keys and the dealer gave me the spare keys that came with the new switch in case I need to use them later .. agree with the previous replies stick with the new dealer these dealerships that think they can can employ morons and get the customer to pay for their mistakes need to learn the hard way or accept that even highly skilled HD trained techs can make mistakes and put it right in favor of the one that pays the bills .

That is the biggest puff of smoke I have ever heard a dealer blow up a customers azz. Heated grips wired through the ECM, wow!!! Mine have went out 3 times with a stock ECM........I thought the grips were junk, now I find out the ECM was CAUSING my problem. I guess a stock ECM and a Tmax are identical. Learn something from the stealer everyday!!!!! :nervous: :nervous:

Even if you install an after market ecm, I don't think Harley can deny you warranty coverage unless they can prove the ecm caused the damage.
