Tour Pack Disaster!!!
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:06:30 PM »

Tonight when I was leaving work, I opened up my Tour Pack, grabbed the stay wire, and gently lowered the lid to the open position, like I always do.  Just as the wire was almost fully extended, it snapped at the lower clevis, leaving the weight of the lid to flip onto the travel limit of the Premium Tour Pack Hinges.  The inertia snapped the surrounding plastic around both hinges, leaving the lid to fall to the parking lot, impeded only by the wiring for the power lock and interior light.   :o :o :o :o     :bigcry:   :bigcry:   :bigcry:

Anyone else have this happen?  Still under warranty.  We'll see if they step up and do the right thing!

Man I am sorry to hear that Spada84...I know that makes you sick.

Sledge...what is the hinge upgrade (ultrabrace) and is it in the H-D Accessories Catalog.

happens from time to time, rather rarely but not unheard of.

I made a habit of never letting the lid go before it's in the fully open position and the wire enganged.

My tour pack lid came off this week as well. Fortunately no damage ensued. I had just got to work and opened it to put my gloves away and as soon as I unlatched it the whole lid started to slide off the back. The screws holding the hinge on the lid had worked loose; I have the leather tour pack on the 07 SEUC with just one big hinge. I noticed there was a loctite patch on the screws but it was too far up on the threads to do any good. Got it back together but going to take the screws out one at a time this weekend and loctite them properly.

That's what I do, every time, but I lower it with the wire.  The wire snapped when the lid was almost open fully, and ran thru my hand.

Sledge's reference to the "ultrabrace" reminded me that I snapped a couple of pictures of an '80's era (?) FLH at HD of Montgomery AL and was surprised to see that HD then used a similar brace for the lid, but later went to the tether device:

Tether failure is not common, but it's not unheard of either.  The problem is probably due to the lower lug not pivoting causing stress on the wires that comprise the tether and the individual wires fail over time until there aren't enough wires left to support the lid.

Hopefully, the warranty will cover the repair.

This is the link at eglidegoodies for the ultrabrace.  Looks like what HD used to have.

I bought an ultrabrace to install at one time.  Looking at the install and the brace, I realized it won't allow the lid to open to the full 90 degrees.  Instead, I bought a 2nd tether to install incase one broke, the other would be there.  They'd both have to go at the same time for this to happen.

Ultra brace it will be. I gave better than half that for my retractable tether and it didn't add any security, just keeps door from shutting on tether. :nixweiss:

SteveFLHTK, I usually hang on to the tourpack lid until it  is in the open position. I like your idea about a 2nd tether. Do you have two tethers installed or is your second one a back up? I was thinking about buying a second tether and getting a slightly longer bolt to connect both tethers at once,  maybe throw a couple of zip ties on them so they don't get tangled up.CAHDBIKER
