Shopping again for a GPS! :(
« on: November 12, 2011, 05:46:38 PM »

Well last weekend my 18 month old truck was left uloncked by the hotel valet and some nice person came along and opened the unlocked door and helped themselves to the GPS (660) that was tucked away in the center console, $30.00 in quarters in the ash can, took our left overs from Ruth Chris and burned my leather seat with a cig.  The hotel has been absolutly awesome about helping us out and asked that I get quotes and they will take care of it.  The person was caught on video and hit a few other cars as well.  The police lifted prints off the ash can and placed him in my vehicle.  He now has a warrant for him.

My question is to go for the H-D 660 or the H-D 665. Not sure if I want to subscribe to XM again after I had the fall out with them over my 6 months free on the new truck and they started to send me bills. I just don't want to buy something and then second guess myself.  At the time I purchased my other one Garmin had a $100.00 rebate.  Is there anything like that going on now?

I think they are offering free lifetime map updates on the Harley 660 or 665.

What do you get besides a higher price and dealership info with a moco branded GPS?

Two year warranty with the MoCo branded vice one for the generic.  Also, the MoCo branded ones work with the NIM, the generic Garmin ones do not.

So what is a "NIM"
Navigation Interface Module.  It lets the gps voice prompts mute whatever you are listening to thru the H-K radio and come through.  Without it you can only hear voice prompts from the gps if you have its audio out connected to the aux port of the H-K radio.

NIM first came standard on the 2011 CVO Road Glide Ultra.  It is on the 2012 CVO Electra Glide Ultra and maybe some other models - don't know for sure.  And of course it is in the P&A catalog and can be had for a few $$$$.

Don't want to  :jack: but, I have the Garmin 660 on my 09SEUC, so you're sayin even if I buy the NIM it won't interrupt music and give voice turn prompts?

That is correct, the Garmin 660 will not interface with HD's Navigation Interface Module (NIM). Only the HD Road Tech 660 or 665 will. Harley unit can normally be bought for less due to 20% off dealers and with lifetime updates now HD model is better deal.
Also I don't think, and I may be wrong, you get a home charger with the HD units and not with the Garmins.

Thanks Cor, thats what I thought. Unfortunately I had purchased the Garmin 660 a couple years ago for Christmas to use on my 2003 RKC but never put it on there because did not like the huge, ugly mount. So was just using it in the wife cage, until last June of 2010 when I got the 09 SEUC. Not a big deal.

The 665 has NexRad weather radar and traffic alert, real cool when on a cross country or extended trip. You will have to buy a mount for the bike, handlebar or cowling as the Harley units do not come with the bike mount, the Garmin units come with a handlebar mount :2vrolijk_21:

You do not need to install the NIM unless you want the radio to mute when a turn prompt is given. Even with the NIM you will need to route the audio output from the GPS to the Auxiliary input on the radio in order to listen to XM, MP3, weather alerts or the phone. To talk on the phone you will need to install a helmet microphone interface (www.hdbomm.com).

The only signal the NIM works for is turn prompts.

2 year warranty as well as 20% off at the dealership then the $100 rebate was the reason why I went with the H-D unit. It made it cheaper than the Garmin unit.

Thanks Tom. Yeah they said they were going to take care of it and I faxed them the estimates and followed that up with a phone call to make sure it was received. Once again I was told they were going to make it right. To replace the lower leather (seat part) is $730.00. I never thought it would cost that much.

yes, if the purchase is made before 12/31/11

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Media/downloads/Genuine_Motor_Accessories/advanced_audio/ZumoRebate_2011.pdf

Thanks bud. This is a good deal and even better with a 20% off MSRP on the unit. Well worth buying the H-D over the Garmin Zumo.
Now to decide if the 665 is needed or stick with the 660
