Heck yes
The cranks are out from the factory. That wears the cam plate bushing and oil pump plus causes vibration. Raise the motor hp and torque and put more load on the already weak press fit and they scissor. This is very common. The rod weights are off by a large margin.

The crank is part of the foundation of the motor, repair this first if you have plans to make one of these motors last and make over 1hp/ci.

Is this from personal experience? I've read that the JIMS 131 is not a good motor for reliability. Just looking for real-world info...

It is a great thing to do. Our cranks are not that great. You will notice improvement just doing this. Is it worth it? Yes. A lot of work if you do it yourself. I am a machinist and I do not mind doing this kind of thing to my rides. If I have to go into the engine on mine, I will for sure do it. But I will not until I either get bored in winter months or have to go into it.  Good luck.

IMHO, if you plan to leave the engine stock or nearly so, and you have no signs of crank issues like pinion shaft runout, I can't see any compelling reason to tear the entire engine down to do this.  However, if you plan to have the engine apart anyway, especially if you're boosting performance, it would be highly recommended.  If you're going to spend several grand on performance engine work, why take the risk of having to tear it all down and do it over because the cheap stock crank couldn't handle the extra torque?  Kind of like the old Fram commercials, you can pay now, or pay a lot more later.

Like a whole lot of services and products offered for Harley's, it has it's place under certain circumstances, but it's not necessarily beneficial for anyone and everyone.

Check both sides
The sprocket side can run out worse

I always check crank runout on the oil pump side when installing cams. In the last two years, the best one I have ever seen was three and a half thousands.(.0035)
.004 is very normal, my 09 was .005. I'm afraid to check my new 2012 103. Its the worst paint shaker I have ever owned. Its getting Andrews 54s real soon,
I'll check the run out then and most likely tear it down and touch up the crank when the 120R goes in. Back in the two stroke days, crank runout beyond .002 was
unacceptable. It would tear the crank seals out. I'm amazed these motors live as good as they do with the cranks wobbling and shaking. Low oil presure is a sign of high
crank runout. It can drop gradually as the pump gets worn down.

That's basically saying your crank is perfect unless you can see the conecting rod laying on the ground in a puddle of oil.
Until that happens they will tell you if it runs, nothing is wrong with it.   :nervous:

Rob...If I had the motor torn down to the point where the jugs were off, I'd go the rest of the way and do the crank and Timken, if for no other reason than not to have to go there again for a very long time.  If I were doing things like changing pistons, upping the compression, doing headwork, cams, lifters, blah, blah, blah, I'd definitely spend the extra to split the cases and do the whole thing 100% right.  If my motor ever takes a crap while it's in warranty, I'll pay the difference to go on and go all the way with it.
