If you're running Windows, you can go to the Character Map and find many special characters.  You can just copy and paste, or if an Alt code solution exists it will tell you what the code is for any particular character.  Memorize or write down the ones you think you will use on a regular basis so you don't need to use Character Map each time.  One that I use often is the degree symbol.  It is Alt 0176, and displays as °.
