I think I got it figured out!
« on: November 26, 2011, 11:38:38 PM »

I pondered for weeks what exhaust I should go with for my '11 SESG. I even spoke to Steve at Fullsac. My mechanic (independent shop) convinced me to go with a new head pipe made by S&S for the new crossover touring bikes and then we installed the Fullsac 2.25 baffles in the stock cans with all packing removed. I have a SERT already installed.  My mechanic said he didn't even need to Dyno it cause the plug readings he was getting were right on.  Just picked it up today and can't wait to put a 100 miles on it tomorrow - so far runs and sounds awesome.

I feel like it's Xmas eve! I can't sleep.  Just wanted to throw it out there....S&S is a well respected co. that's been around a long time. Everyone told me Rineharts steal power??

Hey, I would love to hear those 2.25 baffles!  I have the 2.0 and I am thinking louder!  Post a sound clip?

I had the 2.25" on my '11 SESG...wasn't that loud either.....went with Rinehart slip-ons and I am much happier.

Did you compare the Rineharts to V&H high outputs?  I had Rineharts on last 2 bikes, want something a little different?  Also plan to go to black system to offset chrome overkill

Not side by side in person....I had a set of Rineharts a while back and liked them so I went with their slip on for this bike. I'm happy with my decision. Everybody is different.....what some people consider loud, others dont.

Rio,

I know these posts are about sound level and tone, and not power, but the lady at Fullsac (I'm sorry I can't remember her name) said that on the dyno that the 2.0" made more power than the 2.25".  I went with the 2" because I wanted this bike to be quieter than my WideGlide.  And I realize that everyone have their own tastes!  We don't want them all to be alike do we?

Joe;

I'm surprised to hear that cause Steve @ Fullsac told me that the 2.25" would give me the most hp and also be the loudest? Well, I put a 110 miles on today and I'm even happier after riding it.  What I found to be amazing is that my mechanic didn't even put her on the dyno and she didn't even hiccup once.  Ran like a dream.

As for sound, it is great...although not nearly as loud as I had imagined.  Kind of sounds like Thunder Headers, but more crisp and well defined.  Definitely didn't drown out my tunes even at high speeds.  The power curve is amazing.  I had Rinehart slip-ons on my last Ultra and these are better sounding...I wasn't impressed with the R'harts for the price.  Now, I have the stock cans which I love the look of all for the cost of the FS baffles...$139.  To me, that's a steal.

I must get it on the Dyno....dying to know rear wheel hp?????    JS.........

cyco1450,

I totally agree with you, the 2.25" flows better than a 2.0", and logically would make more power, but that's what I was told on the phone the day I placed my order.  I don't know how much louder the 2.25" is than the 2.0", but I'm totally happy with the 2.0" Fullsacs.  In 6th gear it is very mellow until 3 grand, then she starts talking.  I cruise a lot at 80-85, then the slightest increase in throttle, it really sounds good.

My '05 WG has V&H BigShots w/Big City Thunder power chambers, and it is LOUD.  A very good sound, and the baffles/chambers hold enough backpressure that it still has a good flat curve on the dyno, but it really barks.  Most of the bark is the S&S cams and 10.5 c.r.  On any given day, there are 20-25 Harleys at my work, and I've been told many times by the other riders that my WG sounds better than all of them.

Here is a dyno chart provided by Steve at Fullsac comparing the performance levels of the different power cores:

Interesting, that corresponds to what Steve told me back in 09 when I was ordering the baffles for my 09.

I have since had another tuner tell me if the muffler / baffle is too open, not enough back pressure you will loose low end torque.

That's why the 2.25" cores are the lowest on the dyno compared to the other Fullsac options

Sea Biscuit,

Thanks for posting that link!  I was beginning to wonder if I heard wrong or forgot, but I was sure she told me on the phone that the 2.0" made the most power.

That's a dyno test with a non cat OEM headpipe and stock 255 cams. The story is slightly different with an X Pipe. The X Pipe carries a lot more velocity at low RPM
and is not as sensitive to the core changes, especially with stock cams. With an X Pipe and 54 cams, now the larger 2.25 cores offer an increase in TQ and
HP over the 2.0 cores. So much for the back pressure gives you torque theory. If that was always the case, stock mufflers would work great.
Its always about how the combination of parts work together. Attached is a stock VS Stage II dyno chart from a 2010 CVO with an X Pipe,
2.25 cores and 54 cams. Look at the TQ dip in the stock run compared to the stage II kit. The back pressure from the stock mufflers and cat headpipe
are killing the bottom end. The combination of parts with the 2.25 cores is working well making a nice smooth TQ curve. The 2.0 cores would of had the
same shape to the curve, but down a couple of points at both ends. I still say, run what you want to listen to all day. I run the 2.0s. For me the 2.25 are
too much for a 500 mile day at 80 mph. Its all personal preference.

The way I look at it is, if we're each happy with our performance, we're all happy.  that's why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors. Steve also told me that every motor is slightly different....just like people.  so one 110" may perform a little different from another 110" even though you might expect the exact same result. i followed Steve's direction; I just went with the S&S headpipe (an X pipe) instead of the Fullsac due to my shop's positive experience with it in the past.  I didn't even know S&S was making pipes now.

i'm just thrilled with it and love the sound with the FS baffles and keeping my stock cans....HD actually did a nice job designing these. 8)
