Has anyone figured out a way to install HD XM to the radio on the 2012 CVO Street Glide?

Garmin Zumo..........

I agree with Ghost Rider... the H-D Road Tech Zumo 665 (not the regular Garmin Zumo 665, which will not work with the NIM) is the way to go if you want XM. It doesn't cost all that much more than the XM module... and you get XM built into it, and a full GPS with weather and traffic (with a subscription to them).

Just got the Road Tech Zumo 665 running on my bike on a fairing mount yesterday, using the NIM and the wiring mods for the CVO SG, and the rear aux connector mod. Works great... GPS interrupts the radio for prompts, and I get XM radio through the aux port. Pretty sweet setup!

There are threads in the Electronic Gadgets section about doing all of this.

I personally like the XM built into the radio...that way I can have XM all the time and not have to worry about bringing my GPS and having to remove it every time I make a stop.

FWIW, the Harley XM module works like chit. The reception is bad, between 1 and 2 bars most of the time, and frequently will blip out. I've movee the antennna around, and nothing helps.  Plus when you do finally get a strong signal, the very compressed Bit rate sounds much, much worse than an Ipod or a CD.  Its a total disappointment.

Well, I made the decision to go with the Road Tech Zumo 665 with XM because the H-D XM internal module alone is $500... ???  For only $135 more I got the 665 - with full nav, traffic, and weather - from Surdyke.com. There is a handlebar-mount H-D XM radio that is $250... but it you're going to have something on your handlebar anyway, I would rather it be a full GPS instead of just XM.

It was kind of a no brainer for me. Takes only a few seconds to pop it off and stash it in a saddlebag or in the TP when I'm leaving the bike. The 665 is a much better value for the money than the internal XM module would have been. I will never go anywhere without the 665.

I also have XM in my Avalanche, so I got a multi-radio discount from XM on the whole XM/traffic/weather package for the 665. So it made a lot of sense for me.   :nixweiss: ???

I agree 100% ---  I dropped my subscription after the free period expired.  Going past a big tree will drop your reception.

My XM and wife's work perfectly.  Prefer the clean look of integrated system but if you want a gps then I can understand Garmin option.

It definitely can be done.  I had an XM module with a lifetime subscription on a previous bike and had my dealer install it in my new 2012 SESG before I brought it home.  They had to make a slight modification to the plug-in adapter but got it done easily and it works great.

Even if it worked 100% with perfect reception at all times, you are aware that the sonic quality of the XM stream is just a fraction of a CD or even Higher Quality Ipod? (I always rip to 192kps.)  XM allows up to 128kps for a internet connection, but the terrestrial (satellight) signal is often more like 32kps to 64 kps.  Worse, they use inferrior codecs and variable bitrates. For reference, a CD is 1,411 kps (@16B, higher at 24B).  If you listen to a CD then XM, the difference in quality should be overwhelmingly apparent.

I'm happy with my XM module. I didn't get it for the music though, that's where the ipod comes in. I have the XM antenna mounted where suggested by HD and I've had no problems with reception.

THANK YOU CARL SAGAN! Your intelligence on the matter far exceeds mine for sure. --------------I had no idea that was the case , but I must say I have never had one single problem with reception on my xm module ( 2011 bike not 2012) . I have decided that when my subscription expires though that I won't be renewing it. I use and enjoy the ipod much better than xm or sirius which I have in my truck.
