Labor cost to mount tire
« on: June 30, 2006, 04:21:26 PM »

Just curious what other dealers are charging to mount and balance rear tire.  Picked mine up yesterday and they have increased labor time from 1 hr to 1.25 hrs.  That is at $84 per hr + 5% shop supplies = $88.20 x 1.25 or $110.25 labor.  Is this high or what? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Is this on the bike or off?

The dealers around here charge 1/2 hour off the bike or 1 hour on the bike per wheel. The rates are a lot higher though $110 per hour...

That is on the bike.  They removed the wheel, mounted and balanced the tire and re-installed the wheel.

Dunno.  How good are you with tools?  Do it yourself sometime and decide what it's worth to you.

Add in the price of the tire, and that's the reason I don't do burnouts. [smiley=nervous.gif]

Few days ago...........

RK up on the Craftsman Lift, remove the slip ons, remove rear wheel/tire assembly.

Got the blackwall Dunlop from Dennis Kirk, to my door $117.29.

Took new tire, wheel/tire assy. to Dealer.

Dismount, mount and balance new tire:  $20.00.

I discarded my old tire.

Dealer will charge 1 hour ($60.00) to R&R new tire if I bring in the bike.

On the way to Cripple Creek, I got a nail in my tire. After I plugged it and rode to Zion Harley Davidson, they replaced the tire. The cost was $168. They said that the cost of mounting and balancing the tire was $30 but since I bought the tire from them I got a $30 discount. Total cost $168. The only problem was, they only had thin and wide whitewall tires. They said that Dunlop was three months behind on production, they called three other dealerships and no blackwalls. They worked me in right away because of being on the road and I used a black Marks-a-Lot to fix the thin whitewall.

Don't forget that you have Chrome wheels, Not the cast (Stock wheels) Compare your price the more you spend for show the more it costs to Care for.

$168 for a tire on the rode is a great deal Seeing how the really had you by the short and curlys :) That's a fair dealer! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

That's what I thought, It was cheaper than I could have gotten one locally. And, I was treated with respect. I think it is one of the "Good" dealerships.

Prices were getting so bad around here with the Indy's and Dealers that I finally just bought the stuff to do it myself....I always took the wheel off the bike anyways....now I just go ahead and change it also.....Did my first set a couple weeks ago...wasn't too bad.....took longer than I expected but it was the first time and I'm nearly crippled right now with my back.....a good set of tire levers, some wheel protectors and a static balancer....paid for themselves the first time I used em.

A rear at the dealer was costing me over $200 and another $200 for a front.  I got a pair of Elite III's for $200 shipped.  Places around here won't mount what they don't sell, or they tell you it'll take 3 days and they charge $50/wheel.....F-em....

I brought my old old tires/rims and 2 new tires to Bob Dron's in Oakland.  They charged me .5 hour per tire(mount and balance), so it was $110.  Unfortunately, being the quality Service Department that they are, they mounted the front tire on the back rim and the back tire on the front rim.  They redid their work and they even have the correct rotation!  What a bunch of idiots!

For people that has taken their rear tire off a bagger, did you take the mufflers off or take out the lower shock bolts and drop the swing arm down to clear the exhaust to get the axle bolt out?
The SE Eglide supplemental shop manual gives the option of the lower shock bolt removal.  Sometimes it can be a pain to take the mufflers loose from the headers.   Thanks.
